Fired Up!

This is the last blog submission for 2016 - Thank you so much for your faithfulness and support.  I pray you will invite me into your busy lives in 2017 - so please stay tuned and please keep me in prayer and I will continue to pray for you, my wonderful readers.

Luke 3:16 (RSV) – “John answered them all, “I baptize you with water; but he who is mightier than I is coming, the thong of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie; he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.”
Last week we celebrated the birth of Jesus and adored him as the coming Savior born to a virgin, in a lowly setting, wrapped in swaddling clothing. Well guess what? He is not a suckling babe anymore. He is the King of Kings, the Lord of Lords, riding high and looking low. His hands and feet representing his full payment for our ransom and his blood our purification. He is the Mighty One of the tribe of Judah and don’t get it twisted he is not alone. He is of the God-head along with our Heavenly Father and the All-Powerful Holy Spirit. He is the Way, the Truth and the Life. His life points the way in which we should govern ourselves and our affairs. His TRUTH is that no man can come to the Father except through relationship with him and he offered his LIFE in order to give us abundant and eternal life and for this we should all be FIRED UP!
Some believe that the only way we can evidence the indwelling of the Holy Spirit is that we must speak in unknown tongues and exhibit some outward behavior that is extraordinary or capricious to say the least. It might be true that when the Holy Ghost manifests himself in and on the physical body, people have been known the faint, shout and dance; but do not put the Holy Spirit into an idealistic box what mandates how he should appear. There are times when the Spirit falls so heavy upon me that the only thing I can manage to do is shed tears that continuously stream down my cheeks. Other times I just start singing, making up my own songs and loving on God through praise.
Whatever way the Holy Spirit envelopes you - go with the flow. Catch the fire and keep it going. God is real and he wants you to feel his presence in a personal way. Don’t compare your experience with that of others- some who in public try to fake the fire. Don’t be ashamed of how the Holy Spirit might manifest in your life. You surely do not want Jesus to stand shyly before the Father when advocating on your behalf. Invoke the Spirit’s presence in your daily walk and feel his essence all around you. He is already inside just awaiting your invitation. Remember God never forces, never pushes and never takes hostages; but he does accept all genuine invitations and he always shows up with gifts. Get Fired Up in the Holy Ghost and enjoy the burn.
Every day is a good day; it is up to us to make it a GREAT day! Don’t be distracted, stay focused on your purpose. Be blessed! Have a great weekend....See you in the NEW YEAR !!!    Dr. JoAnn

Timing is Everything!

Mark 9:9(KJV) – “ And as they came down from the mountain, he charged them that they should tell no man what things they had seen, …”
Jesus commanded his disciples to keep to themselves the things he had allowed them to witness until an appropriate time. God resolves many issues for us; opens opportunity doors; shuts distraction windows and places the right people and resources in our paths and in many instances it is best for us to keep quiet until the timing is right. When the angel informed Mary that she would be the mother of our Savior, she pondered all that she was told in her heart. When Abram was instructed about his new future role as father of many nations he did not take out an ad in the local newspaper or post it immediately on FaceBook.
When God provides new insights for us it is important to consider not only the advances that await but also we must be aware that every listening ear does not have a supportive heart. Everyone who claims to be in your corner may not even be in the same room. It is often said that we must not share our big ideas with small minds. Everyone who wants to hear the ‘whole’ story really might only want to hear enough to distort or disclaim what God is bestowing upon you. Be careful and know that timing is everything. Do not be in a great rush to share all that God promises. In the right timing all things will be revealed. One of my favorite quotes comes from Shakespeare who says-“have more than we show and speak less than we know.”

Prayer Agenda

Romans 8:26 - (ESV) – “Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.”
Life’s ups and downs, twists and turns can often place us in positions where we don’t know which way to turn. Once we get out of the initial spin of the situations, our heads can be clouded and our outlook distorted; in these circumstances we know prayer works but often we can be uncertain about what to pray. When we see a storm coming, we pray that it will be averted; when we are in the midst of the storm, we pray for it to cease; when the storm persists, we pray to get through it; when the storm is over, we give thanks for survival. Our prayers are many and varied, but all in all our prayers are communications with our God. Our prayers do not inform God of our needs, desires or petitions; he is fully aware of everything at all times. Our prayers are methods for drawing us closer into union, fellowship and relationship with him
When we feel the yearning to be close to God, his spirit is drawing us near; like a caring parent cradling a child; his love is soothing and in these times we want that closeness but may not know how to approach God, the Holy Spirit does. With petitions that permeate deep into the heart of our concerns, the Holy Spirit goes before God and intercedes on our behalf. Isn’t it wonderful, marvelous and even stupendous that we serve a God who cares about us so much and wants to be in relationship with us so deeply that when we don’t even know how to approach him, he provides an avenue.

So don’t worry if your own prayers seem jagged, rough around the edges, not seeming to express what you really want to say…the Holy Spirit dwells deep within; knows your heart and says …”Don’t’ worry - I got you and I got this!”
Every day is a good day; it is up to us to make it a GREAT day! Don’t be distracted; stay focused on your purpose. Enjoy this third day of Kwanzaa. Be blessed! Dr. JoAnn

Gains and Losses

Mark 8:36 –“For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?”
The last few days have been filled with merriment, family events, church activities, holiday concerts and of course football games. The competition between teams focuses on the strengths and weaknesses of those combating. Game commentators tell of various statistics which denote wins, loses and current standings. The gains and losses over the season keeps the teams jockeying for positions of field advantage and playing options. As teams win they gain higher rankings which puts them into more competitive slots as they approach the final showdown – the Superbowl.
In our life walk we too face challenges where there will be gains and losses. At some interactions we will lose ground, even when we give our best efforts and others will be great wins. Some days we can handle the competition which comes against our faith trying to throw us off track; and other days it is a real scrimmage to beat back the frustrations, challenges and temptations. But in the long isn’t it great to know that the final showdown has already been won. The final victory has been gained through the love of our Savior, Jesus Christ. Born of a virgin, living a mortal existence, sharing in our sorrows and teaching us Godly ways; Jesus makes sure that our gains are not just earthy advances, but that our souls are on track for eternal glory. Give God praise for our victory in Christ.

Unto Us!

Isaiah 9:6 - "6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace."
God gave us the greatest gift in the form of his son, Jesus Christ. I am so appreciative of the gifts of support, friendship and love that I receive from you my faithful readers. May the Prince of Peace bring joy to you today and always. His birth set in motion the redemption of mankind back into fellowship with God... what a wonder!
Every day is a good day; it is up to us to make it a GREAT day! I pray you had a Merry Christmas and that the joy of the Lord be with you as this year winds down and we celebrate the wonders of Kwanzaa! Be blessed. Dr. JoAnn

Thoughtful Hearts

Psalm 19_14 – “Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength, and my redeemer.”
Yesterday I referred this same scripture in regards to the words that we audibly speak and the impact they may have on others. Today we will focus on the second aspect - that which percolates in our hearts. We might be clever, shrew or ‘politically correct’ enough to not say everything that is on our minds; but what about the thoughts themselves.
The scripture tells about the ‘meditations’ of our hearts. When we meditate on something, we rehearse it over and over again. We dwell in its essence and draw from and put into it power. It is a churning, a kneading and a nurturing process. That which we meditate on draws our attention into itself. This can be very powerful if our thoughts are as Paul says in Philippians 4:8- true, honest, just, pure, lovely, of good report and virtue. But if we are harboring ill-will, envy, jealousy, malice, stubbornness, criticism or hatred; then these will brew, get stronger and take over.
Let us be mindful, careful and guarded about the thoughts we meditate on. If negatives pop into your head; quickly push them out and replace them with praise for God and loving ideas. If you have to repeat the process over and over again – GREAT – each time to push out a negative and pull in worship for God, the stronger you fortify your faith and resolve.
Every day is a good day; it is up to us to a make it a GREAT day! Don't be distracted; stay focused on your purpose. Enjoy the weekend.  See you on Monday.  MERRY CHRISTMAS!!   Be blessed! Dr. JoAnn

Acceptable Words

Psalm 19_14 – “Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength, and my redeemer.”
We all have said things that we wish we could remove from the atmosphere. The words just seem to flow out of our mouths and over our lips before we have a chance to really think about the repercussions and impacts they can cause. Sometimes we say hurtful, non-productive or insensitive things because we are just running off at the mouth; or speaking out of turn or just being thoughtless. Regardless of their origin, once that bell is rung we can’t un-ring it.
Today’s scripture reminds us that our words should be acceptable to God and even more so let them be pleasing. Think about it for yourself; there are many ways each day that we encounter things that are acceptable and it involves meeting a particular standard that we have set. We might have a certain expectancy for how our children or grandchildren should act in public or how they respond to others in conversation. But when they are exceptionally polite and show as the elders used to say “like they got good sense and home training” – we are very pleased – even proud. Not only was our expectancy met but they did something that delighted and pleased our hearts. God enjoys us going above and beyond the norm and pleasing his heart also.
Today and every day let us be mindful of our mouths. Be kind to one another. Be respectful of other’s feelings whether friend, family or stranger. Each time you speak know that you are speaking to God through that person. What would you want God to hear?
Every day is a good day; it is up to us to a make it a GREAT day! Don't be distracted; stay focused on your purpose.  MERRY CHRISTMAS!! Be blessed! Dr. JoAnn

Blow Wind Blow

Psalm 1:4 – “The wicked are not so, but are like chaff that the wind drives away.”     All day yesterday we experienced a swift, balmy breeze that whipped the countryside. It was amazing to see the tall palm trees bow to the majesty of the invisible force that pushed their fronds to and fro. As the wind canvased the area it was evident that anything that was not properly secured was in for a tossing.
When the cleansing winds of life sweep through our lives we should do two types of evaluations. One – to see which things need to be nailed down and the other – to see which things we need to allow to blow away. God sends all types of winds into our lives – some to cool, some to sweep, some to stir, some to blow down and some to blow away. There are some things, people and circumstances that we need to cherish more; we need to pay more attention to securing them more tightly and honoring their worth. And there are some things that we are holding on to and cherishing that really need to be loosed and allowed to leave. Ask the Holy Spirit to guide you and he will make it evident which things fit into which category. Blow Wind Blow.

Gotta Say Something

Joel 1_3 – “Tell it to your children, and let your children tell it to their children, and their children to the next generation.”
Now is the season to make ourselves very vocal about the reason for the season. I have noticed that there is an increased insertion of the greeting of “Merry Christmas” this year than I have heard in quite a while. And I am tickled pink and exuberant about it. For years it seemed that to be politically correct we usurped saying “Merry Christmas” for a more bland and ‘safe’ “Happy Holidays”. We did not want to insult anyone who was not a Christian or who did not celebrate Christmas in the traditional sense. Well I never stopped saying Merry Christmas, even if it might have offended others, that is not my charge, my feeling is that I am blessed to know that Jesus wrapped himself in the frailty of human flesh to navigate this tumultuous world as a babe in swaddling clothing; to endure the harshness of constant travel to evade those who would cause him harm; to live out his adult life being misunderstood, lied on, denied and forsaken….all because of his love for me. And some think that to make them comfortable I am going to deny “Merry Christmas” for the milk-toast, lack-luster greeting of a blanketed holiday cheer – No Thank You!!! I will shout it from the rooftop – I gotta say something and that something is MERRY CHRISTMAS! Jesus is the reason for the season.

Fellowship

1 Corinthians 1:9 – “9 God is faithful, by whom you were called into the fellowship of His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.”
The past week has been filled with great fellowship and memory-building activities. I have spent the last few days in southern California where I came to surprise my brother, Stanley with a pre-holiday visit. The Matthews family hosted their spectacular annual holiday bash on Saturday and I knew my brother would be in attendance so I came into town and surprised him when he and his wife arrived. My girlfriend and her family helped me pull off the charade and it was awesome to see his face when he turned around and saw me standing there. Then on Sunday I had another opportunity to attend another surprise gathering as we celebrated my friend Cheryl’s birthday. When I showed up at her function I even surprised most of the other attendees that I was even on this side of the country. What an awesome time we had.
God enjoys surprising us with his fellowship also. Often when we least expect it, his presence fills the room where we are and we can’t help but feel the essence of his character as his spirit warms our hearts.

It was priceless to see the look of amazement and the smiles on my brother’s and my girlfriend’s faces and I knew they felt the love I have for them in going through these steps just to be with them for a few hours. Our God so loved the world that he gave of himself in human form to be born and dwell among us; to guide and encourage us; to love and protect us and the redeem and save us.
The fellowship we have with God is because of the renewed relationship we have with him through our connection with Christ. If this is a connection you need to renew, revitalize or rejuvenate – do that today. God wants to be in fellowship with us and has provided a wonderful avenue through our relationship with Christ to solidify this fellowship. The Holy Spirit which dwells with all believers is our power source that keeps us plugged in and turned on. Keep reading the Word; praying; meeting with fellow believers in congregational worship and watch as your relationship with God becomes a surprisingly wonderful fellowship.

Security Blanket

Psalm 105:39 (ERV)-“The Lord spread out his cloud like a blanket. He used his column of fire to give his people light at night.”
When there is a little nip in the air and the coolness puts a slight chill in the room; there is nothing quite as comforting as snuggling under the warmth of a blanket. Not too heavy like a quilt or comforter; not too light like a throw or linen sheet; but just the right amount of weight and coverage to chase the chill away.
God’s love and mercy shrouds us like a soothing blanket. It surrounds our hurts and envelopes our being. When God was leading the children of Israel on their sojourn through the wilderness he provided shade by day and fire by night through the use of a cloud blanket. It covered them from the harshness of the sun as they pilgrimed through the heat each day and then in the evening it would light the sky to pierce the darkness and keep them warm.
As we live and journey through this life, God has all we need to keep us comfortable, secure, and protected. We may not always know which way to go; what to do, who to trust; or what decisions to make, but one thing we can always rely upon and it is that God’s love will always blanket us and provide for us. Feeling a little chilled? Need some protection from the harshness of everyday life? God is our security blanket and a present help in the time of need.
Every day is a good day; it is up to us to make it a GREAT day. Don’t be distracted; stay focused on your purpose. The year is almost over and we must stay committed to the very end. Have an awesome weekend. See you on Monday!  Be blessed! Dr. JoAnn

Hope, Joy and Peace

Romans 15:13 – “May the God of your hope so fill you with all joy and peace in believing [through the experience of your faith] that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound and be overflowing (bubbling over) with hope.”     Today’s scripture reference has three key terms that exemplify how the ‘new’ man of our walk with God operates through turmoil to find a place of solace. 1) Hope 2) Joy and 3) Peace. When we have the audacity to believe on, in or about something that often isn’t tangible, we have to operate in faith that can only be expressed as joyous. This emotional positive attitude reflects that we ultimately have God’s peace, shalom, in the situation. The hope of belief expresses itself in joy and we can be in perfect peace.
God does not want us confused, off-track, or living double lives trying to keep up with the stigma of having “things”. Put your faith in God and be unwavering. This will nurture and strengthen your faith so when assaults prevail; on instinct you will find the joy that passes all understanding in the midst of your situation. Because you trust in God; use your hope to strengthen your faith and that faith leads to Joy.
As we approach the time when we celebrate the birth of the Christ child it is important to remember that his birth brought hope to the world for salvation; joy to the hearts of all who believe and peace to the situations which try to overwhelm us. Live in this goodness.
Every day is a good day; it is up to us to make it a GREAT day. Don’t be distracted; stay focused on your purpose. The year is almost over and we must stay committed to the very end. Be blessed! Dr. JoAnn

God's Love Letter

Deuteronomy 32:1-4 – “Earth and Sky, listen to what I say! Israel, I will teach you. My words will be like gentle rain on tender young plants, or like dew on the grass. 3 Join with me in praising the wonderful name of the Lord our God. 4 The Lord is a mighty rock, and he never does wrong. God can always be trusted to bring justice.”
Our state has been under a drought alert and lately God has sent gentle rains to reinvigorate the land. Each day the drenching brings new life to the dry soil; slowly raises the stream levels and helps diminish the potential for resurgence of forest fires.
Today’s reference scripture comes from the beginning of a song that God gave to Moses with the instructions to teach it to the children of Israel. Each time they sang it they would be reminded of the great works of God and his tender mercies. The poem delineates the course of events that God carved through history to develop them as a people; to watch their numbers multiply; to deliver them from bondage and to set them on a path to the land of promise and provision.
The song (poem) is indeed a love letter reminding the reader that through all of the adversity, God hears us. Though we may believe we are alone and forgotten, that God is working behind the scenes. When we are wandering aimlessly and not certain which way to turn, God is our present help in time of need. He is a sheltering cloud when things are too intense and a warming fire when the cold world turns against us.
The poem give warnings about our behavior and the need to follow God’s instructions. It gives guidance for living a fruitful and purposeful life and shows that even when we mess up God is ever present to pick us up, dust us off and put us back on the right path. Just as the children of Israel were about to stake their claim in the Promised Land, God has certain laws we must also follow to rightfully stake our claim on the dreams, plans and purposes he has entrusted to us. This love letter tells it all and it is just as pertinent today as it was in the time of Moses. God is the same yesterday, today and forever and his love is boundless and his mercy endureth to all generations.
Every day is a good day; it is up to us to make it a GREAT day. Don’t be distracted; stay focused on your purpose. The year is almost over and we must stay committed to the very end. Be blessed! Dr. JoAnn.

Dream Big, Live Large

Isaiah 54:2,3– “Make your tent bigger. Open your doors wide. Don’t think small! Make your tent large and strong,3 because you will grow in all directions.”
In my home office I have a large white board upon which I have written “Dream Big – Live Large”. This has been my charge for the past few months and I am heavily leaning on this phrase as we approach and enter 2017. As one of my wonderful neighbors constantly reminds us, “victory is ours”. Her gentle yet firm reminders are so needed to keep us focused on the fact that all that we yearn for and desire is already achieved…the victory has happened…we must gather in the spoils. To do this we must learn to expand our thinking, enlarge our horizons and live in the fullness that God has already provided. God created it; Jesus died to purchase it; we acknowledged belief in it and now we must substantiate it by living in it.
Whatever your plans, if you can achieve them on your own…then you aren’t thinking big enough. If you can grasp it with your own power, then you aren’t living large enough. The truly great achievements can only come through submission to and commission with God.

Christ the Solid Rock

saiah 54:14 – “You will be built on goodness. You will be safe from cruelty and fear. So you will have nothing to fear. Nothing will come to hurt you.

When things are uncertain or when you are in an unknown place, nothing is as reassuring as having someone tell you that you are safe and that there is nothing to fear. Especially if that information is coming from a trusted source. God tells us that we are built on goodness. We have to learn to trust God’s word and walk and live in the victory upon which his truth is founded.
Is this to say that we will never be placed in a dangerous situation or that terror will never knock at our door? Of course not, we have no control over the wiles of the world or the influences and actions of evil or just strange happenings; but what God’s word does tell us is that we have command over how we approach and react in uncanny situations. An old familiar hymn says that ‘our hope is built on nothing less than Jesus’ blood and righteousness - we dare not trust the sweetest frame but wholly lean in Jesus’ name.’
The foundation of our peace of mind and assurance comes from our believing and trusting that God shall provide the best path for our destiny. That path may require a bit of struggle and even some set-backs but the greater good of the journey will be our victory in Christ. Our tests will be our testimonies and our testimonies will be that all things work together to glorify God. Don’t sweat the small stuff and compared to our BIG GOD everything is small stuff.     Every day is a good day; it is up to us to make it a GREAT day! Don’t be distracted, stay focused on your purpose! Be Victorious! Be blessed! Dr. JoAnn

Stop Lying!

Hosea 4: 1b-2 – “There is no truth or mercy, and no knowledge of God in the land. 2 Swearing, lying, and killing, and stealing and adultery break out, and bloodshed follows bloodshed.”      This might be foreign to some but to others you might have heard elders say this in your own family - “If you will lie, then you will steal; if you will steal then you will kill – so stop that lying.” If you haven’t heard it exactly like that I am sure there are some similar phrases floating around out there where our mothers, grandmothers or uncles have caught us in a fib when we were young and scolded us about the potential outcome of our wagging tongue.
Lie – steal – kill. We have heard of testimonies that border between near truths to down-right fantasy lying; we have seen footage of rampant pillage where looters give peaceful protesting a bad name as they steal and plunder businesses. We watch as blood stains the streets as brutality hides under disciplinary control.
God warns us, as he did for ancient Israel, through the prophet Hosea, that simple actions that seem harmless can lead to dire consequences when the devil sees openings to spread his venom. When we open our mouths and say that first mistruth, we have to continue to lie in order to keep it alive. Truth will live on by itself and never change… for the truth is the truth; but a lie, being built on fabrication will always need support. Think about it. When I used to ask youngsters a simple question and the answer I got was long and drawn out with a lot of unnecessary details, usually starting with “what had happened was” – I usually knew about 90% of what I was hearing was a lie.     Think about the last lie you told. It wasn’t that long ago, so you don’t have to strain. Did you do it because it was just easier that telling the truth? Or did you do it because you just felt like not sharing the right answer with the party involved? Or maybe it is just second nature and lying is just fun. What might seem like a little white lie can turn into a disastrous situation. Don’t lie at work. Be truthful to your spouse. If you don’t feel like doing a certain activity, tell your friends; stand up for what is right and just tell the truth. Don’t lie to cover yourself - soon the covers will be snatched off and everything will be revealed. Jesus is the way, the TRUTH, and the life. Let’s strive to be more like him. So today, just be mindful of trying to always tell the truth or at least stay quiet. It might even be insightful to keep a little mental notation for yourself of what little “fabrications” might slip into your mind this weekend and work hard to not let them escape between your lips.
Every day is a good day; it is up to us to make it a GREAT day! Don’t be distracted; stay focused on your purpose. Enjoy your weekend. See you on Monday. Be blessed! Dr. JoAnn

The Tempest

Psalm 107:24-25 (NIV)- “ They saw the works of the Lord, his wonderful deeds in the deep. For he spoke and stirred up a tempest that lifted high the waves.”
As we enter the holiday season, the weather in all parts of our country is shifting into ‘winter mode’. We see forecasts of increased rain, snow and potential storms in many areas. Emergency protocols are being reviewed, provisions are being stockpiled and people in potentially affected areas are preparing for the worse. Some meteorologists are making predications of the severity of coming storms and the potential for impact on transportation and basic services. With the potential for devastation always threatening, it is essential for people of faith to remember that all things…yes ALL things… are under the watchful eye and control of God. Not every bad or problematic condition is of evil invention or the after clause of some returning bad karma.
As our scripture for today indicates the wonder of God happens in all aspects of life on planet earth. The same hand that can produce a storm will quiet it. We may not understand why stifling dust storms, blinding blizzards, torrential rains, tsunamis, or the slow moving lava of active volcanoes could be signals of a just and powerful God; but our faith tells us that these occurrences are not times to mourn and complain, but to humble ourselves and draw nearer to God in prayer. Every storm is a call to trust God and rely upon his sovereign grace and perfect will.
What storms do you see brewing on your horizon? What troubles do you see looming just ahead? If God has given you foresight to see the potential for trouble, use these forewarnings as a time for prayer and quiet reflection. Don’t’ always ask God why the storm is coming or why you have to go through the storm. Praise him for the fact that he will not allow you to go through the storm unaware or alone.
There is a lesson in the storm. There is a blessing in the storm. Some things in your life need a shaking and some loose ‘junk’ needs to be blown away. There might be some things that you really don’t need but you are too attached or even to distant to get rid of; so a storm can provide the right impetus to let you focus on the real importance …life itself. How many times have we seen tornadoes totally decimate an area and the residents more times than not will respond by saying…”we lost everything, but that can be replaced…we are blessed to be alive”.
So as the storms are approaching from all directions, let us pray for the safety and well-being of our country-men, neighbors, families and friends; and at the same time, let us praise our God for in his mercy these storms will bring him glory if we know how to ride it out! Your own personal storms will bring God glory if you just let go…let God do what he does best…and ride it out! No murmuring…no complaining….just praying!

Don't Be Stingy

Luke 6:38 (KJV) – “[G]ive, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you.”
When we were kids we might not have known the terms ‘hedonism’, ‘greed’ or ‘avarice’;  but it definitely did not take us long to understand the concept of ‘selfishness’ or ‘ being stingy’. When we had limited resources (just a few pieces of Now and Later or a handful of Lemonheads) and minimal access to disposable cash (hard to stretch that $1.00 allowance); we found ourselves hoarding.  We place tremendous worth on some things that intrinsically have little or no value.
Seed is expensive, yet when he buys seed, the farmer does not hold on to it for dear life.  He prepares his field to receive the life giving vessels and when the sowing process begins, the farmer does not hoard the seed, no matter how expensive it might be.  He lavishly throws the seed into furrows in the rich soil because he knows that each seed has the potential to produce a yield far greater than his investment.  As he gives to the land freely, soon the seeds will take root, grown, blossom and bear fruit.  If he sows 5 seeds and only one grows to become an apple tree; that tree will more than abundantly give him a greater return than what he invested.  One apple will have more than 5 seeds in it; and surely that tree will bear more than one small solitary apple.
We must be willing to give freely and with a good heart and spirit.  God promises that if we do this, our return will be not only ‘good’, which means we will be pleased with the initial harvest but then he sweetens the deal by saying we will gather even more to the point that it will spill over.  When you give, whether it is your tithe, sacrificial offering, love offering, benevolent offering; offering of your time, talents and skills be sure to do so with the ‘measure’ that you want to see come back at you again.  If we are stingy and unwilling to share or if we do share but complain about having to do so…then the measure of our return will be limited, scattered and issued under duress and contention.  And don’t worry if you only have a small amount to share.  When God urges you to give, then do it with a pure heart.  Think about the lad with the fishes and loaves whose lunch served more than 5,000 with scraps left over.  When you place your gift in God’s hands he will make it more than enough.  You will be blessed; those around you will be blessed and God will be glorified.  There surely can be no greater return on your investment.

Not Your Job!

2 Samuel 6:6-7 – “And when they came to the threshing floor of Nacon, Uzzah put out his hand to the ark of God and took hold of it, for the oxen stumbled. And the anger of the Lord was kindled against Uzzah, and God struck him down there because of his error, and he died there beside the ark of God.”
This scripture is taken from the accounting of what happened when one particular man took on a responsibility that was not his and unfortunately suffered dire consequences because of it.  As King David was having the Ark of the Covenant moved to Jerusalem he made a few administrative mistakes and one of his servants unfortunately had to pay the price.
We have all experienced bosses or supervisors who have made decisions that others had to suffer for when all they were doing was trying to complete a task.  David had commanded for the Ark to be removed from Baale-judah and taken to Jerusalem on a new cart pulled by oxen.  That was his first mistake.  God had given specific instructions as to whom could carry the ark and how it was to be carried.  Only the tribe of Levi was to handle the Ark and it was not to rest on an ox cart but to be carried on the shoulders of the priests.  David and his fighting men were celebrating, dancing, chanting, singing and playing instruments.  David’s second mistake was that he did not give the Ark, which represented God’s presence, the reverence that it deserved.  He was celebrating more about what the Ark stood for in transferring the importance of Jerusalem now being the religious and political capital than he gave reverence to God’s providence.
Sad to say, David’s servant Uzzah became a tragic victim of this string of inconsistencies.  The oxen pulling the cart stumbled causing the Ark of the Covenant to shift.  Fearing that it would be cast to the ground, Uzzah did as probably anyone would have done out of a quick reaction; he put out his hand to catch the Ark and keep it from falling.  God’s command was that only the priestly tribe could handle the Ark and even then they had to move it by securing poles through the rings that were fashioned on each side.  It might seem harsh but God struck Uzzah done immediately and killed him for his actions.  The death of Uzzah was a reminder of the power of God and the importance of following his laws.

Someone may command, order, coax, trick, cajole, tease, dare or even ridicule you into doing something that you know is not what God has commanded for you to do. Although they were following orders there are many accountants who wish they had not moved a decimal point; teachers who regret changing grades; coaches who showed favoritism and medical professionals who skirted around proper protocol. Take the high road. Always follow the dictates that God puts into your heart.  Follow his directions and even if the outcome might not be favorable in the sight of worldly position or promotion or achievement; you will garner the favor of God through your obedience.

Do You Know God?

John 3:16 – (NRSV)“For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life."

Over the years since I started writing this blog, I have received feedback from many believers who speak of how the writings have inspired, convicted and even enlightened their souls.  Of course as an amateur wordsmith those words of encouragement and support have kept me focused and on task.  When looking forward to the New Year I reviewed some of the topics that God penned through me and one area that I have been amiss in my writing is the formal invitation to you the reader to exam your life in God.
While I write these blogs with the target audience of Christ-baptized believers in mind, I am sure there are some readers who have not accepted Christ as their personal savior or who have moved from Christian faith to more generalized ‘spiritual’ connections with God the Creator.  Our relationship with God is personal and eternal.  I honor everyone’s belief and level of belief, but I would be amiss of my own calling if I did not offer Christ to you.
Perhaps you’ve never thought about God’s calling on your life.  His first goal for you is salvation; then the Holy Spirit will come to live within you empowering you to do all God has planned for you.
If you don’t know Christ as your personal Savior, that can change today.  All you have to do is confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, and you will be saved. (Romans 10:9)
Won’t you take this step today? You can use the following prayer or your own sincere words:
“Lord Jesus, I believe you are truly the Son of God. I confess that I have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed. Please forgive all my wrongdoing, and let me live in relationship with you from now on. I receive you as my personal Savior, accepting the work you accomplished once and for all on the cross.  Thank you for saving me.  Help me to live a life that is pleasing to you.  Amen.”
Pray daily for renewed strength, understanding and revelation and enjoy your new life in Christ.

Rules Rule

Psalm 19:8 (ERV) -“ The Lord’s laws are right. They make people happy. The Lord’s commands are good. They show people the right way to live.”

Everywhere we turn there are signs telling us what to do or what not to do. Doors tell us to ‘exit only’ or ‘ no entrance’; street lanes are ‘right turn only’ or ‘no passing zones’; stores tell us ’10 items or less’ or this lane for ‘cash only’. ‘ No food or drink allowed’; ‘ use only 40SAE oil’; ‘do not microwave’, ‘ no sitting-no standing-no leaning-no parking-no running-no swimming-no diving- no left turn, no right turn, no nothing’! We see courtesy signs, warning signs, humorous signs and even signs to tell us what other signs are for; but all in all each sign is to inform us of a particular command or rule that is designed to keep us safe and living in peace with others.
God’s laws are the framework for all of the civil rules we see in the world around us. Some believe that since we live under ‘grace’ we no longer need to fuss about the rules and regulations that were outlined in the Old Testament. God’s laws were designed to show us our need for salvation but they are not out-of-date or out of sorts. We may not need to sacrifice lambs and bulls anymore but we do personal sacrifices when we yield ourselves to the rules and commands of God.
Sometimes the laws seem a bit restrictive, but when we (like Paul proclaimed) are prisoners of Jesus, held captive by his love, we don’t mind following his guidelines and living under his direction. These rules keep us pure, safe, healthy, guilt-free and in some cases even temporarily free from sin. When we read the scriptures and learn the lessons that the proverbs, psalms, gospels and epistles provide we garner wisdom that helps us lead productive and Christ – centered lives.     Every day is a good day; it is up to us to make it a GREAT day. Don’t be distracted; stay focused on your purpose. Enjoy the weekend. See you on Monday! Be blessed! Dr. JoAnn

Turn Back

Luke 17:15-19: “And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, and with a loud voice glorified God,16 And fell down on his face at his feet, giving him thanks: and he was a Samaritan. 17 And Jesus answering said, Were there not ten cleansed? but where are the nine? 18 There are not found that returned to give glory to God, save this stranger.19 And he said unto him, Arise, go thy way: thy faith hath made thee whole.”(KJV)
Of the ten lepers cleansed by Jesus, only one turned back to give thanks and in doing so he was made whole. The other nine were indeed healed but purely by the grace and mercy of Jesus, despite their ingratitude. The thankful man was not only healed but Jesus made him whole. Nothing lacking; nothing missing. His wellness was because of his faith. He got the cake and the icing too.
Right now you might be going through some tough situations and that so-called light at the end of the tunnel is nothing more than another fast-paced locomotive speeding toward you ready to run you over. The greener grass seems to never grow on your side of the fence and the silver linings of your dark clouds keep flaking off. Regardless of these things we must remember that daily God is providing for us and if we take our eyes off of the things that seem to be going wrong, we can channel enough of our consciousness to be thankful for the many things that are going right. The devil always wants you to shift away from the positive to dwell on the negative. Don’t’ do it. Don’t be so focused on your problems or what might even seem to be a solution that you miss the healing and the opportunity to turn back and give thanks.
