What A Ride!!!

Psalm 103:2-3- “Bless the Lord, O my soul; And all that is within me, bless His holy name! 2 Bless the Lord, O my soul, And forget not all His benefits:”
     A quote by Hunter S. Thompson states- “Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming "Wow! What a Ride!”
     I love this quote and that is how I am ending this year. I have had a wildly adventurous and uniquely exhilarating year. It has been filled with trials, tragedies, twists and triumphs. But most of all it has been filled with the love of God and his faithfulness. As I write this last blog entry for 2017 it brings me great pleasure to say I am thankful for all of my readers, your comments, your support and most of all your desire to read my thoughts which keeps me faithful to publish God’s word. Let’s enter 2018 with the mindset to take the reins and ride hard and get all that God has provided for us; share our victories; learn from our stumbles and keep on praising and praying. I love you.

Fired Up!

Luke 3:16 (RSV) – “John answered them all, “I baptize you with water; but he who is mightier than I is coming, the thong of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie; he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.”
     Earlier in the week we celebrated the birth of Jesus and adored him as the coming Savior born to a virgin, in a lowly setting, wrapped in swaddling clothing. Well guess what? He is not a suckling babe anymore. He is the King of Kings, the Lord of Lords, riding high and looking low. His hands and feet representing his full payment for our ransom and his blood our purification. He is the Mighty One of the tribe of Judah and don’t get it twisted he is not alone. He is of the God-head along with our Heavenly Father and the All-Powerful Holy Spirit. He is the Way, the Truth and the Life. His life points the way in which we should govern ourselves and our affairs. His TRUTH is that no man can come to the Father except through relationship with him and he offered his LIFE in order to give us abundant and eternal life and for this we should all be FIRED UP!
     Some believe that the only way we can evidence the indwelling of the Holy Spirit is that we must speak in unknown tongues and exhibit some outward behavior that is extraordinary or capricious to say the least. It might be true that when the Holy Ghost manifests himself in and on the physical body, people have been known the faint, shout and dance; but do not put the Holy Spirit into an idealistic box what mandates how he should appear. There are times when the Spirit falls so heavy upon me that the only thing I can manage to do is shed tears that continuously stream down my cheeks. Other times I just start singing, making up my own songs and loving on God through praise.
     Whatever way the Holy Spirit envelopes you - go with the flow. Catch the fire and keep it going. God is real and he wants you to feel his presence in a personal way. Don’t compare your experience with that of others- some who in public try to fake the fire. Don’t be ashamed of how the Holy Spirit might manifest in your life. You surely do not want Jesus to stand shyly before the Father when advocating on your behalf. Invoke the Spirit’s presence in your daily walk and feel his essence all around you. He is already inside just awaiting your invitation. Remember God never forces, never pushes and never takes hostages; but he does accept all genuine invitations and he always shows up with gifts. Get Fired Up in the Holy Ghost and enjoy the burn.

Acceptable Words

Psalm 19_14 – “Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength, and my redeemer.”
     We all have said things that we wish we could remove from the atmosphere. The words just seem to flow out of our mouths and over our lips before we have a chance to really think about the repercussions and impacts they can cause. Sometimes we say hurtful, non-productive or insensitive things because we are just running off at the mouth; or speaking out of turn or just being thoughtless. Regardless of their origin, once that bell is rung we can’t un-ring it.
     Today’s scripture reminds us that our words should be acceptable to God and even more so let them be pleasing. Think about it for yourself; there are many ways each day that we encounter things that are acceptable and it involves meeting a particular standard that we have set. We might have a certain expectancy for how our children or grandchildren should act in public or how they respond to others in conversation. But when they are exceptionally polite and show as the elders used to say “like they got good sense and home training” – we are very pleased – even proud. Not only was our expectancy met but they did something that delighted and pleased our hearts. God enjoys us going above and beyond the norm and pleasing his heart also.
     Today and every day let us be mindful of our mouths. Be kind to one another. Be respectful of other’s feelings whether friend, family or stranger. Each time you speak know that you are speaking to God through that person. What would you want God to hear?

Tarry with Friends

Judges 19:9 (NLT) – “Later, as the man and his concubine and servant were preparing to leave, his father-in-law said, “Look, it’s almost evening. Stay the night and enjoy yourself. Tomorrow you can get up early and be on your way.”
     Happy Kwanzaa - today is celebrated as the day of Umoja (Unity) in which we strive for and maintain unity in the family, community, nation, and race. Yesterday I ventured across the country to land at the doorstep of some good friends who opened their hospitality for me to stay the night. Early this morning I am leaving for a drive into the desert to spend a few days unwinding. As the scripture depicts, the act of hospitality is a blessing. Whenever and wherever life takes you to the threshold of those who open their hearts and their doors to you, it is imperative that you accept and share in their love. It is important for building and maintaining close relationships and it is needed to support the principles of ‘unity’. Let’s not be so consumed with getting to a destination that we miss the life-enhancing opportunities to tarry with friends.

Unto Us

Isaiah 9:6 - “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace."
     God gave us the greatest gift in the form of his son, Jesus Christ. I am so appreciative of the gifts of support, friendship and love that I receive from you my faithful readers. May the Prince of Peace bring joy to you today and always. His birth set in motion the redemption of mankind back into fellowship with God... what a wonder!

Traveling Mercies!

Luke 10:33 – “But a Samaritan while traveling came near him; and when he saw him, he was moved with pity.”
     Today’s scripture snippet is from the tale of the stranger who was traveling and became the victim of senseless violence and left for dead. Many passed along the way and did not want to get involved in helping; but one lone Samaritan took care of the man and not only tended to his immediate needs but also provided for his continued care.
     Many of us are traveling this Christmas, whether across country or just across town to visit with loved ones and friends. Regardless of the route, the journey’s length or destination my prayer today is for your safe sojourn and that God’s traveling mercies be with you going and coming. Too many are anxious to get last minute things accomplished; tempers might flair and patience is worn thin; so be careful and know that God’s angels travel with you. Look for opportunities to be a Good Samaritan to someone in need. While you are out and about be the hand of God by doing some random acts of kindness. The reason for the season is Jesus Christ and he is love. Help return a shopping cart to the store; give up a place in line to someone obviously struggling with time; keep a little spare change in your pocket to drop into the Salvation Army red bucket as you enter or leave the local merchants; take a baked good to your precinct police or fire department. 'Tis the season to be jolly but more so to show love.

Do You Know God?

John 3:16 – (NRSV)6 “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life."
     Over the years since I started writing this blog, I have received feedback from many believers who speak of how the writings have inspired, convicted and even enlightened their souls. Of course as an amateur wordsmith those words of encouragement and support have kept me focused and on task.
     When looking forward to the New Year I reviewed some of the topics that God penned through me and one area that I have been amiss in my writing is the formal invitation to you the reader to exam your life in God.
     While I write these blogs with the target audience of Christ-baptized believers in mind, I am sure there are some readers who have not accepted Christ as their personal savior or who have moved from Christian faith to more generalized ‘spiritual’ connections with God the Creator. Our relationship with God is personal and eternal. I honor everyone’s belief and level of belief, but I would be amiss of my own calling if I did not offer Christ to you.
     Perhaps you’ve never thought about God’s calling on your life. His first goal for you is salvation; then the Holy Spirit will come to live within you empowering you to do all God has planned for you.     If you don’t know Christ as your personal Savior, that can change today. All you have to do is confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, and you will be saved. (Romans 10:9)
     Won’t you take this step today? You can use the following prayer or your own sincere words:
“Lord Jesus, I believe you are truly the Son of God. I confess that I have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed. Please forgive all my wrongdoing, and let me live in relationship with you from now on. I receive you as my personal Savior, accepting the work you accomplished once and for all on the cross. Thank you for saving me. Help me to live a life that is pleasing to you. Amen.”    Pray daily for renewed strength, understanding and revelation and enjoy your new life in Christ.

Thoughtful Hearts

Psalm 19_14 – “Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength, and my redeemer.”

      We might be clever, shrew or ‘politically correct’ enough to not say everything that is on our minds; but what about the thoughts themselves.  Today’s scripture tells about the ‘meditations’ of our hearts.  When we meditate on something, we rehearse it over and over again.  We dwell in its essence and draw from and put into it power. It is a churning, a kneading and a nurturing process.  

     That which we meditate on draws our attention into itself.  This can be very powerful if our thoughts are as Paul says in Philippians 4:8- true, honest, just, pure, lovely, of good report and virtue.  But if we are harboring ill-will, envy, jealousy, malice, stubbornness, criticism or hatred; then these will brew, get stronger and take over.  

     Let us be mindful, careful and guarded about the thoughts we meditate on.  If negatives pop into your head; quickly push them out and replace them with praise for God and loving ideas.  If you have to repeat the process over and over again – GREAT – each time to push out a negative and pull in worship for God, the stronger you fortify your faith and resolve.

Be Consistent

Deuteronomy 26:17-"You have declared today that the Lord is your God, and that you will walk in his ways, and keep his statutes and his commandments and his rules, and will obey his voice."
     God knows the precise timing of the work he has purposed through us and we must not allow circumstances to sway us off course through distractions; or to abandon our post because we are bored or tired. One of the most devastating influences which causes us to lose our momentum and leave our tasks undone is being overwhelmed. As long as we are operating in the strength that God provides we can push on until completeness; but when we operate in our own strength we quickly tire and become prey to the devil's constant whispers and suggestions to slow down or give up.
     Remember how happy you were when you started that job? You were so on fire because you needed to work, you had bills and responsibilities; and as I like to say -" I enjoy sleeping and eating indoors"; so it was wonderful being employed and you thanked God. He opened that opportunity not just so you could pay bills but so that your spirit could do a work for him in that environment. But something happened... you stopped abiding in him and tried to work it by your own ability and now you are frustrated. Nothing really changed... the boss is still as crazy as they were day one; the bus or car ride is still the same distance; the early days or late night shifts are still just as dark. The main change is how you operate in the arena where God has placed you. Don't carry yokes that are too heavy and fight battles that are not yours. Continuously operate in the strength of God and you won't break down or give out.

The Greatest of Us All

Luke 14:13-14 (ESV) - “13 But when you give a feast, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, 14 and you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you. For you will be repaid at the resurrection of the just.”
     Yesterday I was blessed to participate in facilitating a Christmas feast for the developmentally and physically disabled patrons who are clients of one of my consulting assignments. What a wonderful affair it was. While many may be attending festivities where the highlight of the day surrounds over-dressing and over-eating, we experienced unspeakable joy to be amongst God’s children who are examples of “over-coming”.
     Many of the individuals we serve are just as the scripture describes – lame, crippled and blind. But their spirits are whole and in tune with God and he has selected us to bless them with activities that keep their spirits soaring.     The CEO/Founder of the agency not only aspires to meet their basic needs, but she moves them from the ranks of clients to the fellowship of family members. Each one is treated like a relative and loved beyond measure. What a wonderful way to spend a Sunday afternoon. Feeding, fellowshipping, making and sharing memories with the “least of these”, who really show us that they are the ‘greatest of us all”.

Revisit - Loose LIps!

I thought this lesson needed a repeat performance! - Pass it on!

Proverbs 11:13 –(HCSB) “A gossip goes around revealing a secret,
but a trustworthy person keeps a confidence.”

   During the World Wars, before the age of GPS, satellite imagery, 3-D scanning, underwater photography and computer radar detection; when battleships and submarines used simple listening devices to figure out the locations of enemies; the decree given when danger was perceived was for the crew to go into radio silence. They would cut the engines and everyone would cease all unnecessary movement.  Talking was replaced with hand signals because they knew that ‘loose lips’ could cause their location to be detected and the possible sinking of their ship.

      Unnecessary talking can be extrapolated to also include the unneeded and unwarranted banter of gossip. If what we say does not edify, glorify, magnify or rectify a situation then chances are what we have to say never really needs to be said.  There is a place of course for whimsical chatter often referred to as ‘girl talk’ or ‘barber shop heckling’; but when the words that we share reveal secrets that should not be disclosed; or expose truths that are not ours to bear witness to; then we are no longer involved in the art of conversation, but in the jaws of rumor and innuendoes.

     Spreading gossip or even just talking to be heard can cause problems not only for the poor victims but also for us.  It can tarnish our reputations and damage the trust that others place in us.  If we open and spew out the details of what others have told to us in confidence, we might escalate a situation to a fever pitch and cause anger and resentment when the source of the leak is found. As the young generation now says…’snitches get stitches’.

      Be careful also to not share too much of your own personal information with a ‘motor mouth’ friend.  Fast talkers, who seem gregarious and really spirited, might be masked rumor-mills in hiding. When you talk to someone who openly tells you everything about themselves or others; chances are if they can’t be discerning about their own affairs, they surely will not keep yours either. God gave us two stereophonic ears but only one mouth.  Listen more, speak less.

Not Your Job

2 Samuel 6:6-7 – “⁶ And when they came to the threshing floor of Nacon, Uzzah put out his hand to the ark of God and took hold of it, for the oxen stumbled. ⁷ And the anger of the Lord was kindled against Uzzah, and God struck him down there because of his error, and he died there beside the ark of God.”

     This scripture is taken from the accounting of what happened when one particular man took on a responsibility that was not his and unfortunately suffered dire consequences because of it.  As King David was having the Ark of the Covenant moved to Jerusalem he made a few administrative mistakes and one of his servants unfortunately had to pay the price.

 We have all experienced bosses or supervisors who have made decisions that others had to suffer for when all they were doing was trying to complete a task.  David had commanded for the Ark to be removed from Baale-judah and taken to Jerusalem on a new cart pulled by oxen.  That was his first mistake.  God had given specific instructions as to whom could carry the ark and how it was to be carried.  Only the tribe of Levi was to handle the Ark and it was not to rest on an ox cart but to be carried on the shoulders of the priests.  David and his fighting men were celebrating, dancing, chanting, singing and playing instruments.  David’s second mistake was that he did not give the Ark, which represented God’s presence, the reverence that it deserved.  He was celebrating more about what the Ark stood for in transferring the importance of Jerusalem now being the religious and political capital than he gave reverence to God’s providence.  

     Sad to say, David’s servant Uzzah became a tragic victim of this string of inconsistencies.  The oxen pulling the cart stumbled causing the Ark of the Covenant to shift.  Fearing that it would be cast to the ground, Uzzah did as probably anyone would have done out of a quick reaction; he put out his hand to catch the Ark and keep it from falling.  God’s command was that only the priestly tribe could handle the Ark and even then they had to move it by securing poles through the rings that were fashioned on each side.  It might seem harsh but God struck Uzzah down immediately and killed him for his actions.  The death of Uzzah was a reminder of the power of God and the importance of following his laws. 

      Someone may command, order, coax, trick, cajole, tease, dare or even ridicule you into doing something that you know is not what God has commanded for you to do. Although they were following orders there are many accountants who wish they had not moved a decimal point; teachers who regret changing grades; coaches who showed favoritism and medical professionals who skirted around proper protocol. Take the high road. Always follow the dictates that God puts into your heart.  Follow his directions and even if the outcome might not be favorable in the sight of worldly position or promotion or achievement; you will garner the favor of God through your obedience.

Patience Pays

Romans 5:4 (ERV) -“And his patience is proof that we are strong. And this proof gives us hope.”
     The other day while the ‘winter storm’ was bearing down upon the city, I decided what better thing to do than to try to help someone in need and I braved the roadways to take him to an appointment. In the course of the day, through flurries of snowflakes, bumper-to-bumper traffic and freezing temperatures, I witnessed what can happen when we practice patience.
     For the most part I noticed that many motorists were kind enough to allow fellow drivers to merge. Very few horns were blown nor did I witness any raised fists or lowered windows with blasphemous shouts being emitted. As we crept along the slick roadways, it was obvious that my prayers and the prayers of many others had been answered. Just as the snow was blanketing the city; a spirit of calm and cooperation was blanketing the area where I traversed.
     It could be said that somewhere else all ‘hell’ was breaking loose, but in my small corner of the world, all was at peace. I knew the circumstances might be bleak and that road rage could have been a consequence but my expectation from the power of my prayer was what materialized for me and those who shared the road with me. Prayer does change things and patient anticipatory expectation is key to seeing things manifest.

The B.I.B.L.E.

Joshua 1:8 (NIV) –“This book of the law shall not depart out of your mouth; you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to act in accordance with all that is written in it.”
     Well the time is fast approaching when we will have toys and games, bikes and tricycles that need to be assembled so that we can put these treasured gifts under the Christmas tree. We have all shunned the need to read the instruction manuals that accompany the newly acquired items. We figure we are smart enough and astute enough to figure out how to put it together; how it operates; and how to maintain it. But in actuality when reality sets in, we realize there is always an extra bolt or screw left over when we do it our way. 
      Often our attempts to do-it-yourself can lead to costly malfunctions. Some things are too complex and intricate to leave up to educated guessing. Such intricacy is seen in life on planet Earth and God, our Creator, has provided a basic instruction manual (the Bible) with guidelines, case studies, testimonials and even some step-by-step instructions for many daily situations.
     While everything we encounter in the human experience is not spelled out verbatim in scripture – there are key references, notable parables and plentiful examples to help us live the life of promise God intended. Find a version of the Bible that best explains God’s word in a way that is clear to you; join a Bible study and ask God for His enlightenment of the scripture. Read the book. It truly is a life-saver!

Be Gracious!

Psalm 103:8 -The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.”
     I have mellowed in my older age but I have to admit that back in the day my patience for ignorance was nil or next to none; especially in conversation. Once I discerned that the person I was talking with was a filibuster, a show boater, a braggart or a liar, I dismissed them and dismissed myself from the conversation. Why waste good listening on foolish talk.
     In some regards we have all played the role of the 'mouth' when we have approached God with foolish talk; whether we were telling God about our plans, our directives, our decisions or belly-aching about our circumstances. We have engaged in show boating when we speak more highly of ourselves than we ought knowing full well that if it was not for the grace of God we would be lost. We have all lied, even if it was only to ourselves about our abilities to handle our lives.       Through it all God never gives us his love in a filter. He does not handle us ‘straight with no chaser’. His love is always embraced with not only mercy but grace. God never dismisses us or tunes us out. He is a gracious in his love and care.
     We must exercise gracious living when we interact with others. Not everyone will respond favorably but that is not our concern. Covered in the blood of Jesus and guided by our Advocate, the Holy Spirit, we must exhibit behaviors that edify, lift and encourage those that might not know how great our God is. We are a reflection of the God we serve; so always put your best foot forward and be gracious!

Relax!

Matthew 11:28-30 "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light."
     Hard to believe we are at the end of the first week of the last month of this year. Whoa…how quickly time has flown. Over the past few months, my life has been a total whirlwind. All great stuff, but so tiring. From seminary graduation, ministry ordination, completing teaching my college courses, my own consulting contracts and of course writing my blogs and hosting my Bible study ministry….whewww. Today I am going to heed my own words and listen to the teachings of today’s scripture… for at least a little while in the midst of all the stuff that still needs to be done, I am going to relax.
     There's nothing like rest and rejuvenation to spark the spirit and heal the soul. Sometimes we just need to put the brakes on and slow ourselves down to a complete stop. Many of us are running on full throttle so much that we are whisking through life and really not enjoying the scenery. We all know that the rat race is out there.... but we also know that the second rat gets the cheese. Slow down... feast on the day... smell the flowers; better yet take some time and actually plant a few.
      We hurry though each day wishing for it to be over but in reality we are asking for our lives to hurry and be done. You might say- "I can't wait until next month, this project will conclude." It seems like a harmless statement but remember our words are very powerful. Before you know it the time has come and gone; but what other important things have you also sped through? Time you could have spent with family; time you could have enjoyed doing things you like; reading, crafts, movies; time you could have used deepening your relationship with God. Well I am embracing the fine art of doing as Jesus says in Matthew 11:28-30 "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”

No Comparison

Galatians 6:4 (NLV):  “Everyone should look at himself and see how he does his own work. Then he can be happy in what he has done. He should not compare himself with his neighbor.” 

     We are individually and uniquely made by the hand of our Creator as he knit us together in our mothers’ wombs.  We have our own special styles, tastes, likes and dislikes. We have wonderful skills and talents, though similar in type are all different in degree, scope and number. We are special to God as individual works of art on his potter’s wheel. It is said that God’s gift to us is our talent, but our gift to God is how we use it for his glory.

     As we go about the purpose of our lives and fulfill the works that God has placed along our paths we must be careful not to compare our journey with that of others. Even cars driving along on the same highway, heading in the same direction travel at different speeds going to different destinations.  Some drivers get on and never change lanes until it is time to exit; while others weave about like honey bees darting from flower to flower. 

     The scripture reminds us to scrutinize ourselves and to run quality control tests on our own work. As we focus on doing our best with the cards we have been dealt, we should not have time or interest in comparing our walk with anyone else.  It is good to have role models and to look up to others for examples.  It is ok to glance at the paths that others have taken so that we might learn from others' mistakes and good fortunes; but we must draw the line when we try to disregard what God has prepared for us.  Our journey is special and our way has been ordained by God.  Every walk that looks easy or better than the one we are on only causes us to sell short the benefits that God has placed in the journey we have been assigned. 

    Have your trips, stumbles and falls along the way been because your path has been so rough and rugged or has it been because you have your eyes gazing in someone else’s lane and missed the warnings, potholes and pitfalls on your own path?. Stay in your own lane and enjoy what lies ahead for you.  God is a way maker and your journey will bring you joy and him glory.

The Awakening

Samuel 2: 6-7 - Again the Lord called Samuel, so Samuel got up, went to Eli, and said, “I’m here. You called me?” “I didn’t call, my son,” Eli replied. “Go and lie down.” (7 Now Samuel didn’t yet know the Lord, and the Lord’s word hadn’t yet been revealed to him.)”
      Today’s scripture relays a part of the calling of Samuel into prophetic service for God. As young boy he was ‘promised’ into priestly service by his mother, Hannah, who sorely wanted a child and when God granted her request she dedicated him back to God. Now living under the tutelage of Eli, he started to hear the call upon his life, but was unaware of its source. Three times he heard God speaking to him and three times he went into the bed chamber of the Priest thinking that it was Eli who had summoned him.
      We must be judicious in listening for and responding to the call that God has placed upon us. Samuel was obedient and even though he might have thought it was strange to keep being sent back to his bed, each time he thought he heard his master Eli call – he jumped up and went to see what was needed.
     When we are uncertain of what God might be saying, or if it is even him that we think we are hearing from… it is imperative that we respond. God will keep calling and he wants us to learn his voice. Listen and be ready to move to the next level.

The Tempest

Psalm 107:24-25 (NIV)- “ They saw the works of the Lord, his wonderful deeds in the deep. For he spoke and stirred up a tempest that lifted high the waves.”
     The weather on the east coast has been up and down and all around for the past month or two. We are fast approaching the heart of winter and some of the trees here in Atlanta haven’t decided if their leaves should change color, drop or just cling on for dear life. Soon we will experience some much needed rain and hopefully the fog will dissipate so we can actually see the beauty of the raindrops and the rainbows that come with them.     As our scripture for today indicates the wonder of God happens in all aspects of life on planet earth. The same hand that can produce a storm will quiet it. We may not understand why stifling dust storms, blinding blizzards, torrential rains, tsunamis, or the slow moving lava of active volcanoes could be signals of a just and powerful God; but our faith tells us that these occurrences are not times to mourn and complain, but to humble ourselves and draw nearer to God in prayer. Every shift in the weather is a call to trust God and rely upon his sovereign grace and perfect will.
     What shifts do you see do you see brewing on your horizon? What troubles do you see looming just ahead? If God has given you foresight to see the potential for trouble, use these forewarnings as a time for prayer and quiet reflection. Don’t’ always ask God why the storm is coming or why you have to go through the storm. Praise him for the fact that he will not allow you to go through the tempest unaware or alone. There is a lesson in the storm. There is a blessing in the storm. Some things in your life need a shaking and some loose ‘junk’ needs to be blown away. There might be some things that you really don’t need but you are too attached or even to distant to get rid of; so a storm can provide the right impetus to let you focus on the real importance …life itself.
     So let us pray for the safety and well-being of all parts of our country as weather patterns are changing. Let us praise our God for in his mercy these storms will bring him glory if we know how to ride it out! Your own personal storms will bring God glory if you just let go…let God do what he does best…and ride it out! No murmuring…no complaining….just praying!

I Can See Clearly Now

1 Corinthians 13:12 – “For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known.”
     If you live in Georgia and are an early riser like me, then you know that for the past few days we have been inundated with a thick, unrelenting fog bank that has crept up during the night and lingers through much of the morning. It is eerie to watch as the low hanging clouds make their way down the streets and over the manicured lawns with a stealthy quiet that might remind one of how the angel of death came upon all of the first born of Egypt in the time of Moses.
     One can barely see the street lights or your hand in front of your own face when the fog billows over the surface of the street. Often without warning you will stumble upon someone who seems to appear out of nowhere, when all along they have been approaching from a distance that you cannot discern. Everything around us is dim and unfocused.
Today’s scripture reminds us that we live a similar ‘dim’ existence and often stumble around in the ‘fog’ of life; but rest assured, just as the sunlight of day pierces and burns off the fog, the light of the world, Jesus will pierce through the darkness and the fog that surrounds us. We will no longer stumble and strain to make our way; but see clearly what paths to take. All in his timing and all under the direction of the Holy Spirit we will be awakened. All things will be made clear and discernable.

Feast or Famine

Philippians 4:12-"I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need."
      Some days it seems we have a little surplus; enough to share with others and a little left over to bank away. Then other times we are ordering from the dollar menu and not super-sizing a thing. Our journey is full of days of plenty and nights of insufficiency; but through it all the secret of enduring is to do as Paul prescribes. There are three things he shared in his epistle to the church at Philippi.
     1) He acknowledged that abasement is where we are "brought". Usually we do not venture to go to the minimum. We are often brought into situations where we may be depleted or used up. Whether it is our money, our time, our resources or our energy, we can be drained if we are taken out of our element and operate in unfamiliar dimensions. Therefore a remedy is to get back to the familiar and operate in your strong suit.
     2) He tells that there is a 'know-how' associated with levels of existence so we must be cognizant of where we are, how we got there and then be open to shift between one and the other without it effecting who we are. The old adage states that "clothes do not make the man"; character is what defines him. So whether your shoe bottoms are red or full of patchwork, carry yourself with dignity and keep your head and countenance up.
     3) Paul stated that he learned to 'face' any situation. No matter what station you find yourself in life, do not be ashamed of where God has placed you. Whether in the High Court or in the prison; Paul never lowered his standards or lost his inner self worth. He knew and always proclaimed that it was not him but the Christ that lived within him that made all the difference in the world. As long as we have the King of kings, the Lord of Lords and the purveyor of everything in us, why should we care whether we are being escorted to our private table at 'McCormick and Schmick's' or standing in a soup line. Keep your head up. Nothing lasts forever but God! So if you are 'up' right now, be kind to those who are not. If your train has entered a dark tunnel, rest assured soon there will be the light of Jesus to illuminate your way and get you back on prosperity's track.

We are forgiven

Psalm 32:1 - Happy are those whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered.”
     There is no greater joy like the feeling that comes when we are released from the shadowy grip of sin. When we know that we have transgressed against someone or when we have allowed our sin nature to run rampart and the result of these actions have warranted forgiveness….oh what a relief it is to shake off the burdensome weight when we are forgiven.
    We have all said and done some things that we are not proud of or that we know was a bit out of character. We have opened Pandora’s box of unnecessary comments and flung wide the door of unsolicited opinions. So when these things have occurred and we are blessed to be forgiven for our ‘stepping out of bounds’ – how joyous it is to be forgiven. Don’t delay… allow this final day of November to clear some cobwebs from relationships that could benefit from the language and heart of forgiveness. Be ready to usher in December with a happy heart.

Get Ready for Change

1 Kings 2:11 (NRSV) - 11 The time that David reigned over Israel was forty years; he reigned seven years in Hebron, and thirty-three years in Jerusalem.”
     Today marks our 33 day count down to the end of this year. While David was told as a youth that he would be king, it wasn’t until many years and trials later that he was actually crowned. In today’s scripture we see that his reign was not a continuous, ‘sit-on-the-same-pew” kind of existence. He ruled from one location for a period of time that could have led him to believe that it would be a permanent spot; but his true calling was to govern from Jerusalem. When he made his home-base there; then he ruled for 33 years. You might be in a similar situation where you believe that you are in the ‘comfort zone’ of your existence; but God may have another plan in mind. Even if things are running smoothly and it seems that there is no need for change does not mean that God’s plan does not involve a move. Get your mind ready for the potential of a great move, promotion, or transformation.

Speak Praise

Psalm 34:1 – “ I will bless the Lord at all times; his praise shall continually be in my mouth.”
     We continue this week illuminating ways to stay on point as we enter the advent season. Today’s scripture tells us to keep the praise of God on the tip of our tongues. No matter what is happening around us, we are to continually give God praise for he is worthy. Since God inhabits the praises of his people, then we know that no matter what he will be right in our midst. 
      So, while things may be great or not so good, it really does not matter because we do not praise God through emotion, but in adoration. I know it can be very difficult to keep upbeat when life is beating you down – but consider this… regardless of what is coming at you, God is standing with you. Give him praise and watch as he shoulders the majority of the trial, buffers the hurt and soothes the anxiety. Life and ‘crazy’ stuff is going to happen. Isn’t it wonderful to know that we don’t have to travel this road alone, unprotected or aimlessly. God is with us, he shields us and he guides us. Recite Psalm 34:1 over the situation and keep praising.

God Harasses Our Hecklers

Psalm 35:1 – “Contend, O Lord, with those who contend with me; fight against those who fight against me!” (NRSV)     Today marks the thirty-five day countdown to the end of this fast-paced year so I thought this week I would share some familiar scriptural text that illuminate how to go out of this month with a bang and enjoy the festivities that the advent season will bring.
     Our scripture today which is from the 35th Psalm reminds us that we have a conquering Lord. David in his petition to the Lord does not ask for strength to fight or to run up against those who were fighting against him, but rather he petitioned for God to do what God has always said he would do – fight our battles. God tells us that his yoke is easy and his burden is light. That we are to put on our whole armor and the ‘stand’. That he is our shield and buckler. In today’s text we gain courage from the fact that God will contend, fight, battle, attack, oppose and plead our cause with anyone or anything that strives against us. So this week as you are coming back from the ‘high’ time of food and fellowship from the Thanksgiving Holiday be aware that there are forces (within and without) that might rise up to spoil the good mood you want to continue. Don’t surrender or give in to bullying tactics of adversarial forces that just don’t want you to be happy. Recite Psalm 35:1 over the situation and keep pushing.

Giving Thanks

2 Timothy 1:3 - “I always remember you in my prayers day and night. And in these prayers I thank God for you. He is the God my ancestors served, and I have always served him with a clear conscience. “

I am humbled by how our awesome God has guided my life to thread through the lives of so many wonderful people. Thanks be to God and thank you my dear readers for your love, support and encouragement. Enjoy the day and know that you are appreciated!

The Right “Stuff”

Ecclesiastes 3:1 - “There is a right time for everything, and everything on earth will happen at the right time.”

     Yesterday morning I was blessed with an impromptu visit from my goddaughter from California. She was making her way here to do a visit with extended family. Although I had tons of work on my plate and prep work to do for Thanksgiving dinner, I put everything on hold to spend some quality time with her.  It was a wonderful time to stop and relish our relationship. She and her sister are my first godchildren and although we are separated by thousands of miles our bond is deep.

    It was no thought whatsoever for me to put things aside in order to spend time with her. We laughed, we reminisced, we talked  seriously about current issues, we talked about family ties and what the future might hold. The few brief hours that we spent yesterday reminded me of how important it is that even in the mist of all the hustle and bustle do what God did for us.  God is eternal so he literally “made” time for us.  Let’s be sure to not get so caught up in the “stuffing” that we forget the real important “stuff” of life.

Take time to love on someone today.  You will both be richer for it.

Just a Thought!

Isaiah 58:7 – “Share your food with everyone who is hungry; share your home with the poor and homeless. Give clothes to those in need; don’t turn away your relatives.” (CEV)
     I heard some disturbing news yesterday while talking with a friend about the upcoming Thanksgiving Day activities. She informed me that the city of Atlanta is upholding an old ordnance which will require those giving food to the homeless obtain a permit and relegate their activities to a specific area only. Many homeless and poor people will miss out on a traditional Thanksgiving meal because of red tape and gentrification prejudice. The rationale is that this will limit the number of ‘donors’ and the amount of trash that is generated from this sort of distribution. Instead of going where the homeless are and serving their needs; now those who feel impassioned to assist, must set up in designated areas which may or may not be accessible to those most in need. 
      I am sure there are other nuances of this ruling that are not known by us and I am certain that I have received only one side of the issue, but it just seems so tragic that we are so concerned about the trash that is left on the streets more than those who are living on the streets.
No one seems to feel crazed about trash when the college students storm through town at homecoming; or when sporting events generate tons of rubbage; or when impromptu gatherings in the park for ‘movie nite or parades or marathons create mounds of trash. Instead of punishing those who are trying to give why not establish a program where they can contribute large trash bags and use a team of ‘volunteer’ homeless (many who crave jobs) who will serve as clean up crews. The payment for their services could be vouchers for a few good nights of sleep at a climate-controlled shelter. The donors can keep on cooking and distributing; those in need can keep on eating; the city streets could be cleaner and vulnerable people could be off of the street for a little while.….Just a thought…

Time with God

Hebrews 10:25- “We must not quit meeting together, as some are doing. No, we need to keep on encouraging each other. This becomes more and more important as you see the Day getting closer.”

     I was up early yesterday morning trying to get it together to decide to go to church... not really feeling it ... not Because I did not want to go to church,  but I thought about the tons of work and the soon approaching deadlines that I have and decided to play “hookie” to use those hours to catch up. The past week with all of my phone and technical glitches had thrown me so off-course I needed every second to get work done. 

      I am such a “church chick”  I rationalized that I really didn’t need to go ...over the past 10 days I had been to 2 services, a funeral, a revival meeting and 2 bible studies... my sermon tank was full....so I sat on the side of my bed and believed that I was “good” and didn’t have to go .....that is why I needed to make sure I went....and I did.

     Whenever I don't feel like going but show up is when I thump the devil in the top of his head and push onward because I know my faithfulness is pleasing to God. Worship isn't about how I feel but how grateful I am .. I attended the early morning service and had a great time praising, praying and listening to the Word.  My spirit was so energized that I also stayed for Sunday school and didn’t rush out when everything was over.  I gave God back a portion of his time that he so graciously gives to me. I shared and fellowshipped with like- minded folks and my soul was encouraged. 

I eventually made my way home and God honored my time tithe by opening up my intuition to complete many of my desired assignments in record time. While I still have more things to complete one thing is crystal clear ... no matter what is on your plate; always take the time to worship and give thanks and watch how God will hold the sun in the sky until you accomplish your goals!

Don't Hesitate

Samuel 17:48: “ So it was, when the Philistine arose and came and drew near to meet David, that David   hurried and ran toward the army to meet the Philistine.” 

        Once David had analyzed the problem (Goliath); figured out the reward ( riches, honor and a beautiful woman); and came up with a battle plan (5 smooth stones and a slingshot), he did not hesitate to confront the issue head on.  Goliath made light of his young adversary and mockingly walked slowly toward him as he taunted David with curses.  This did not sway David in the least.  He knew his objective and he ran into his destiny.  Today is the last day of the first month of the new year and we can already note  how quickly time is flying by. Do not let opportunities to slay the giant, pressing issues in your life pass by.  Time waits for no one. It keeps marching on whether we are prepared for the future or not.  

         Let’s not waste precious time procrastinating and hesitating under the guise that we are thoroughly analyzing the problem.  While it is beneficial, just like David, to have a battle plan in place.  It is never advantageous to repetitiously rehearse and never carry out the real act.  David knew that time was of the essence and that God’s protection and grace were upon him at that very hour.  God does not do for one what he is not willing to do for others.  Whatever is on your heart.  Fill out that application; make that phone call; shut down that repressive relationship; start the ball rolling to open your own business; learn to sew; stop smoking; join a fitness group…..just do it!!!    

         My college friends and I loved to play Bid Whist and one of our favorite taunts was to tell a player who was slow to act…”study long...study wrong”.  In essence,  take a good look, sum up the situation, map out your strategy and play your hand,  don’t hesitate.  Strike while the iron is hot.  Go for it.

Recognize the True Source

Acts 16:17-18– “17 She started following Paul and the rest of us around. She kept shouting, “These men are servants of the Most High God! They are telling you how you can be saved!” 18 She continued doing this for many days. This bothered Paul, so he turned and said to the spirit, “By the power of Jesus Christ, I command you to come out of her!” Immediately, the spirit came out.”
     This passage comes from a very familiar bible text recalling the interaction between Paul, Silas and a young girl possessed with the ability to tell the future. The ability to see and announce the future is relegated to those who are gifted with prophesy from God; the unrighteous use these gifts to fool the masses and set them up for destruction. She was possessed by an evil spirit who caused her to appear to be helpful and doing the ‘right thing’. This young girl was the servant (possession) of men who used her abilities to make money. For days the young girl followed Paul and Silas making proclamations; that although they were true; they were not coming from a righteous source. When Paul had enough, he turned and rebuked the spirit in the name of Jesus and it had no choice but to leave her.
     When the devil sees that you are on point about your walk with God and doing his work, he will send wolves disguised in sheep’s clothing to be in your midst. They may appear to be harmless and even helpful, but their ultimate goal is your destruction. Some of the smiling faces and helpful agents around you who seem to possess good news for you may not have the true GOOD NEWS (the gospel) in them at all. They know the right words to use; they get close enough to you to learn of your needs and challenges and then they stroke you with enough icing to make you believe that their cake is good; but it is poison.
      Paul and Silas heard this young girl, under the influence of an evil spirit, say all matter of factual things about their ministry; but they did not fall for the flattery. Be aware of how the devil will use those closest to you to do his dirty work and even they might believe that what they are doing is good. If you read the text carefully you find that Paul did not speak against the young girl; nor did he chastise her; but he forcibly spoke directly to the evil that was attached to her. When God gives insight about the true actions of people around you; don’t get mad at them; they are only being used to try to sway your journey. Many of them; just like the young girl; may not have control of their own lives; they may be under the rule of past frustrations, hurts and disappointments. They become willing candidates to hurt others because they have been hurt. Recognize the true source and call it out. When you speak up and protect God’s calling on your life he will honor you by dismissing evil from your presence.

Time Stands Still - (Remix)

Joshua 10:13 (GNT) –“The sun stood still and the moon did not move until the nation had conquered its enemies. This is written in the Book of Jashar. The sun stood still in the middle of the sky and did not go down for a whole day.”
      Do you have some unfinished business that you feel you might not be able to complete because time and resources are not on your side? Could one more hour of study possibly increase your scoring potential? Would an additional week make the difference between a mediocre and a good product? Can an additional month give you more time to raise the funds you need? Would another year make your business truly successful? We often try to negotiate with time, but time waits for no one…or does it?
     Joshua and his troops saw that their battle was requiring more daylight so Joshua spoke to the sun and commanded the daylight to remain as he and his troops fought on. God wants your days to be filled with successful ventures and for your life to be a reflection of the good and grace that he provides. Remember it is never too late for God. Things are never out of the control of God’s influence. When Joshua spoke into his destiny, God answered and responded with a resounding ‘yes’ - and the sun remained in position. Speak power into your situation. Speak with authority for what you need and want. The universe is just waiting to respond and give you what you need. Things are being held up in the heavens and just require you to speak up to manifest them into this physical world. God has already answered the prayers that you need more time to carry out a mission or that you need the resources or people to be in place to carry out your mission. All that is needed from you is to believe and receive.

Spiritual Understanding

Colossians 1:9 – “Since the day we heard these things about you, we have continued praying for you. This is what we pray: that God will make you completely sure of what he wants by giving you all the wisdom and spiritual understanding you need.”

     This past week and throughout the weekend I was inundated with multiple assignments and ‘things’ that needed to be attended to, participated in or just looked after.  Whether I was transporting friends, attending services, shopping for loved ones, answering distress calls or just standing in the gap as a prayer partner – these past days have proven to be quite exhilarating.  While my physical body was often fatigued from the skipped meals and lack of sleep, my mind and spirit soared to greater heights as I found myself progressing forward in the ministerial work God is laying out before me.

     I am sensing the spiritual understanding that today’s scripture speaks about.  I give God praise for his faithfulness and I offer thanks to you my supportive readers.  I know your prayers avail much because I feel them guiding me to newly revealed truths.  Thank you for praying for me, my ministry and my greater understanding of the “path”.  I pray for your uplifted countenance and for God’s plan and purpose for your life to become clearer and more resolute.  As we pray for one another, God honors our supplication by granting wisdom to conquer all that presents itself as obstacles or challenges.  And as a great friend says  - “And so it is”!

Tell Your Face - Revisit

Exodus 34:35 (ESV)- “ the people of Israel would see the face of Moses, that the skin of Moses' face was shining. And Moses would put the veil over his face again, until he went in to speak with him.
     When I ask someone how they feel or how things are going and their answer and facial expression do not match, I often tell them to “tell your face” how you feel because it appears it does not know. When our actions and our words do not match it is confusing to our subconscious which runs on commands. If we keep telling ourselves that things are good yet we scowl, frown and grimace at every turn in the road; our body language will override our consciousness and implant deep-seeded reactions.
     It is great to practice what you preach. If you say that you feel well; make sure you match that with a smile. If you profess to be ‘blessed and highly favored’; then align that with bright eyes and an un-furrowed brow. God tells us when we are fasting to not look desperate or hungry; so the opposite is also true; when you are doing fun activities and feeling on top of the world- be sure to tell your face.

Leading Lady

Judges 4:4 – “Now Deborah, a prophet, the wife of Lappidoth, was leading Israel at that time.”
         Those of us in the Metro-Atlanta area have been bombarded over the past few months with campaign propaganda, smear campaigns and just plain old fashioned rhetoric over election platforms and promises. We know each candidate wanted to put their best foot forward; but it seemed as if the only way they could do that was to try to trip others. Now that the madness for the most part has been settled at the polls, now the real battle begins.
       The mayoral race has come down to a December run-off between two women vying for the leadership role for the city. Whether one, the other or neither were your person of choice or if you don’t live within a 1000 miles of Hotlanta, we are all affected by this soon to be decided outcome. In this globally connected world that we live in, the issues of one certainly do affect the livelihood of others.
     Today’s scripture tells about the prophet Deborah who became a prominent judge for Israel. Considering the time in which she lived, many may be astonished to learn of her role and the history that was laid out because of her actions. As a strong advocate for justice and the courage that surpassed many of the men under her rule, Deborah spearheaded a God-ordained attack against Israel’s oppressors. The ensuing victory lead to a forty year reign of peace.
     We do not  know the outcome of the upcoming mayoral run-off between these two women but to those who may scoff because they believe this job is too much for a woman to handle – Atlanta has had a previous woman mayor and the new selectee will prove to meet the challenges head on. Let’s look not at gender, but at her ability to lead.
