What A Ride!

Psalm 103:2-3- “Bless the Lord, O my soul; And all that is within me, bless His holy name! ² Bless the Lord, O my soul, And forget not all His benefits:”

A quote by Hunter S. Thompson states- “Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming "Wow! What a Ride!”

I love this quote and that is how I am ending this year.  I have had a wildly adventurous and uniquely exhilarating year.  It has been filled with trials, tragedies, twists and triumphs.  But most of all it has been filled with the love of God and his faithfulness.  As I write this last blog entry for 2015 it brings me great pleasure to say I am thankful for all of my readers, your comments, your support and most of all your desire to read my thoughts which keeps me faithful to publish God’s word.  Let’s enter 2016 with the mindset to take the reins and ride hard and get all that God has provided for us; share our victories; learn from our stumbles and keep on praising and praying.  You are loved.

Same Song

Mark 8:36 –“For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?”

In the early 1990’s the rap group Digital Underground released the song “All Around the World Same Song”.  While the lyrics are ubiquitous one or two lines really always resonate in my memory of Tupac Shakur as he pronounced:

“Get some fame, people change, wanna live they life high
Same song, can't go wrong, if I play the nice guy
Claimin' that they must have changed now that we came strong
I remain still the same, why Tu'? 'Cause it's the same song”

As we fast approach the ending of this year with anticipation of the New Year we must be mindful that things come and go but we must be true to the new creature that God has created within us.  When we confess Jesus as our personal Savior, we become new creations and in this newness we must continue to grow nearer to God and further from the wiles of the world.  We live in this world but our hearts and minds must be stayed on Jesus.  No matter what comes up as ‘new’ or ‘improved’ in the world it really is just the same old song.  Same old things just repackaged, glittered-up and presented as the next best thing.  We must remain the same in our pursuit of God’s Kingdom and stay true to our desires to please him.

Thoughtful Hearts!

Psalm 19_14 – “Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength, and my redeemer.”

    Yesterday I referred this same scripture in regards to the words that we audibly speak and the impact they may have on others.  Today we will focus on the second aspect - that which percolates in our hearts.  We might be clever, shrew or ‘politically correct’ enough to not say everything that is on our minds; but what about the thoughts themselves. 

     The scripture tells about the ‘meditations’ of our hearts.  When we meditate on something, we rehearse it over and over again.  We dwell in its essence and draw from and put into it power. It is a churning, a kneading and a nurturing process.  That which we meditate on draws our attention into itself.  This can be very powerful if our thoughts are as Paul says in Philippians 4:8- true, honest, just, pure, lovely, of good report and virtue.  But if we are harboring ill-will, envy, jealousy, malice, stubbornness, criticism or hatred; then these will brew, get stronger and take over.  Let us be mindful, careful and guarded about the thoughts we meditate on.  If negatives pop into your head; quickly push them out and replace them with praise for God and loving ideas.  If you have to repeat the process over and over again – GREAT – each time to push out a negative and pull in worship for God, the stronger you fortify your faith and resolve.

Acceptable Words!

Psalm 19_14 – “Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength, and my redeemer.”

     We all have said things that we wish we could remove from the atmosphere.  The words just seem to flow out of our mouths and over our lips before we have a chance to really think about the repercussions and impacts they can cause.  Sometimes we say hurtful, non-productive or insensitive things because we are just running off at the mouth; or speaking out of turn or just being thoughtless.  Regardless of their origin, once that bell is rung we can’t un-ring it. 

     Today’s scripture reminds us that our words should be acceptable to God and even more so let them be pleasing.  Think about it for yourself; there are many ways each day that we encounter things that are acceptable and it involves meeting a particular standard that we have set.  We might have a certain expectancy for how our children or grandchildren should act in public or how they respond to others in conversation.  But when they are exceptionally polite and show as the elders used to say “like they got good sense and home training” – we are very pleased – even proud.  Not only was our expectancy met but they did something that delighted and pleased our hearts.  God enjoys us going above and beyond the norm and pleasing his heart also. 

     Today and everyday let us be mindful of our mouths.  Be kind to one another.  Be respectful of other’s feelings whether friend, family or stranger.  Each time you speak know that you are speaking to God through that person.  What would you want God to hear?

Unto Us!

Isaiah 9:6 - "6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace."

God gave us the greatest gift in the form of his son, Jesus Christ.  I am so appreciative of the gifts of support, friendship and love that I receive from you my faithful readers.  May the Prince of Peace bring joy to you today and always.  His birth set in motion the redemption of mankind back into fellowship with God... what a wonder!

Traveling Mercies

Luke 10:33 – “But a Samaritan while traveling came near him; and when he saw him, he was moved with pity.”

Merry Christmas Eve and God’s continuous blessings on all. 

     Today’s scripture snippet is from the tale of the stranger who was traveling and became the victim of senseless violence and left for dead.  Many passed along the way and did not want to get involved in helping; but one lone Samaritan took care of the man and not only tended to his immediate needs but also provided for his continued care. 

    Many of us are traveling this Christmas, whether across country or just across town to visit with loved ones and friends. Regardless of the route, the journey’s length or destination my prayer today is for your safe sojourn and that God’s traveling mercies be with you going and coming.  Too many are anxious to get last minute things accomplished; tempers might flair and patience is worn thin; so be careful and know that God’s angels travel with you.  Look for opportunities to be a Good Samaritan to someone in need.  While you are out and about be the hand of God by doing some random acts of kindness.  The reason for the season is Jesus Christ and he is love.  Help return a shopping cart to the store; give up a place in line to someone obviously struggling with time; keep a little spare change in your pocket to drop into the Salvation Army red bucket as you enter or leave the local merchants; take a baked good to your precinct police or fire department.  Tis the season to be jolly but more so to show love.

Step by Step

       Proverbs 20:24 – “The Lord guides our steps, and we never know where he will lead us.”

At O’dark:30 this morning I rose to take a dear friend to the airport.  Upon returning home it was still quite early and the sun was still probably just setting in some part of the western world so I knew it would be still be dark here for quite a while.  Instead of crawling back into bed I spent the wee hours of the morning just walking around my house praising God for his faithfulness and bounty.  Christmas dinner will be here this year and as I have been preparing to receive my family I have spent memorable moments just reflecting on how much God has pruned, shaped, and nurtured me over the past few years. 

       As I entered my prayer room, which we serenely call the ‘chapel’ my eyes caught the “Footsteps” writing I have posted on one of the walls.  I have heard it and read it many, many times but this morning I read again and the Holy Spirit really reminded me of how much God does love us and when the hard times in our lives rush upon us, he gently lifts us in his arms and carries us onward.  Tearfully as I read the last few lines I knew this morning I wanted to share with you the steadfast love of God.  No matter what you are going through; whether you are in the beginning of a trial, in the midst of the storm or bruised and battered from just completing a soul-stirring battle – know that God never leaves us alone…he holds, carries, protects and loves us dearly.  Think back on your own footsteps and give God praise for his loving, supportive and ever-present arms.

Tarnished vs Tainted

Matthew 6:20 – “ Instead, save your treasures in heaven, where they cannot be destroyed by moths or rust and where thieves cannot break in and steal them.”
     

      As many of you faithful followers have read over the past few weeks I have moved and now for the most part have unpacked many of the items I brought with me from my most recent residence. But the fun is just now beginning as I am delving into boxes that have been in storage for a few years while I have been on my nomadic sojourn. 

     I was able to place many of my items in climate controlled storage environments; but others were in garages or basements or areas where moisture and temperature fluctuations caused some damage. For example, silver serving platters and many other metal items showed signs of tarnish; but could easily be restored with a little care and polishing. On the other hand, some of my favorite tablecloths, curtains and even shoes met their doom because mold and mildew ravaged their fibers. It would have been better to have given those things away than to have stored them.

       There are things in our lives which require us to take them off the front burner; place them on the side line; or shift our priorities to handle other things. While we are handling other life circumstances these things might remain dormant, unused or even forgotten until we can return to them. Evaluate what really needs to be placed in a holding pattern for later use and what things really need to be eliminated, shared or given away because they are not destined to make it through the wait. Store up only those attributes, personality traits and characteristics which will make it in the long haul. They will stand the test of time. Get rid of malice, envy, jealousy and covetedness which will only taint and eat away at the good things in your life.

Elimination Time

Hebrews 8:1 – “Now this is the main point of the things we are saying: We have such a High Priest, who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens,”

    We had a fun, yet often frustrating game, as a child that involved the use of a group of participants, chairs and music. The game of elimination required the arrangement of the chairs in a circle with one less chair than the number of participants; the music would start and we would walk around the circle in front of the chairs.  When the music stopped each walker would dash to sit in a chair; and of course the one who did not find a spot was eliminated.  With each round an additional chair was removed until the very end when it came down to only two who would vie for the solitary seat. 

    We need to start snatching the chairs out of the circle of our lives and eliminating the things that do not belong, no longer fit or of little use to our progress.  What might have been operational, important, fun or even helpful earlier now is just in the way and slows our forward movement.  Listen to the melody that the Holy Spirit is playing in your heart and when the time is appropriate cut loose the fringes, stragglers and cling-ons that are trying to take the prime seat of our life.  When the final music is played only Jesus should be in the winner’s seat, King of your life. 

    It might seem a bit difficult to cut some ties and most often those are the very ones that are distracting you, blocking your blessings or just holding you back from having true victory in your situations.  Pray and ask the Holy Spirit to reveal your ‘chair huggers’ and for the discernment and courage to pull the chairs out from under them.  The Psalm 23:5 scripture says that God prepares a table before us in the presence of our enemies; it does not say he provides a seat for them.  Let them stand in the corner and watch you progress and God be gloried.

Godly Obedience - Be Consistent

     We conclude this week with our look at characteristics of Godly obedience by being  "consistent". This simply means to keep at it until God gives you release.  God knows the precise timing of the work he has purposed through us and we must not allow circumstances to sway us off course through distractions; or to abandon our post because we are bored or tired.  One of the most devastating influences which causes us to lose our momentum and leave our tasks undone is being overwhelmed.     As long as we are operating in the strength that God provides we can push on until completeness; but when we operate in our own strength we quickly tire and become prey to the devil's constant whispers and suggestions to slow down or give up.  

     Remember how happy you were when you started that job? You were so on fire because you needed to work, you had bills and responsibilities; and as I like to say -" I enjoy sleeping and eating indoors"; so it was wonderful being employed and you thanked God. He opened that opportunity not just so you could pay bills but so that your spirit could do a work for him in that environment. But something happened... you stopped abiding in him and tried to work it by your own ability and now you are frustrated. Nothing really changed... the boss is still as crazy as they were day one; the bus or car ride is still the same distance; the early days or late night shifts are still just as dark. The main change is how you operate in the arena where God has placed you. Don't carry yokes that are too heavy and fight battles that are not yours. Continuously operate in the strength of God and you won't break down or give out.

Godly Obedience - Be Exact

     In continuing our look at characteristics of Godly obedience, today we highlight trait #2 -which is to be "exact" in following the commands of God. Just look at the works of the Earth's design and the mathematical precision of the heavens; it is evident that our God operates through a system of creative order.  He does not throw things to chance but utilizes "Divine Order" in creating and appointing.

     Read the story of Achan in Joshua 7 and see why precision and exactness in following God's desires is crucial for those who love him and aim to please him. The children of Israel were given specific instructions of how to handle the spoils of war and one man's decision to "do it his way" caused the death and destruction of thousands. We are all a part of the building of God's kingdom and the action of one effects the lives of others.  When God tells us how to do something, where to do something and when to do something it is for a specific reason and he expects and requires that we be obedient and trust him.  Don't worry if it seems strange to your carnal intuitions or perplexing to those around you. When God told Joshua to have the people walk around the city of Jericho he didn't say ..."do it until you get tired"... he gave specific instructions.  And if you listen to God carefully he will guide you also.  Do it the right way! Be exact.

Godly Obedience - Instant

Deuteronomy 26:17-"You have declared today that the Lord is your God, and that you will walk in his ways, and keep his statutes and his commandments and his rules, and will obey his voice." 

     As a child I played the piano for my Sunday School class devotional period and one of my favorite songs was “Trust and Obey”.  For the remainder of the week I want to share a few chief characteristics of Godly obedience.  First of all when we are obedient our response must be "instant".  Don't dillydally. drag your feet and procrastinate.  Take lessons from Jonah and Abraham- do the assignment when it is given. Jonah had his own agenda and even though God made it plain what he was supposed to do, how to do it and where to do it- he bucked and did not respond right away- he fled.

     On the other hand Abraham (at that time called Abram) believed God and even though he was given few details he responded and set out on a journey that set the course of blessing and salvation in motion. He did not know where he was going or even how God would manifest the promises given to him but he got up and got to "stepping". Today I encourage us to be instant in our response to God. If you waver because you are uncertain that what you are feeling is "truly" from God- ask you him! Tell him YES and ask for clarity- but respond.  God is not the author of confusion; he may not give you every step or detail but his peace will allow you to operate in surety; that's how you will know you are on the right path.

Simple Words

Romans 5:4 (ERV) -“And his patience is proof that we are strong. And this proof gives us hope.”

   Over the course of the past few weeks I have experienced a series of bizarre yet painful accidents; from burned fingertips, sprained shoulders, skinned knees to even busted fingers slammed in a car door.  All of these freaky occurrences culminated in me going to the doctor yesterday because of numbness and fatigue.  After several circulatory and physical strength evaluations; my physician said the words that I needed to hear – “you have great circulation, just give yourself time to heal”. After two trip-and-falls I knew the pain I was feeling was not normal.  I never gave myself time to heal.  After my bout with ‘sleeping’ digits, I figured the injuries needed a little tender loving care - but I needed to hear it from a trained medical professional and someone I could trust.  I needed the reassurance that my problems would diminish in time and that each day is a step toward feeling better.  As the scripture reminds us…  patience, hope and healing all go hand-in-hand and must obey the laws God has set I motion for process and patience. 
     We can try to hurry and worry but God’s timing always overrides our anxiousness and heals all of our afflictions.  We must learn (like I did the hard way) to slow down, enjoy the process and anticipate the newness yet to come.  What are you rushing through today that needs a little more time to marinate?  Are you gathering your harvest before its prime ripening?  God’s time is best; be patient with the process and enjoy the steps.

Turn Back!

Luke 17:15-19:  “And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, and with a loud voice glorified God, And fell down on his face at his feet, giving him thanks: and he was a Samaritan. And Jesus answering said, Were there not ten cleansed? but where are the nine? There are not found that returned to give glory to God, save this stranger. And he said unto him, Arise, go thy way: thy faith hath made thee whole.”(KJV)

       Of the ten lepers cleansed by Jesus, only one turned back to give thanks and in doing so he was made whole.  The other nine were indeed healed but purely by the grace and mercy of Jesus, despite their ingratitude. The thankful man was not only healed but Jesus made him whole.  Nothing lacking; nothing missing. His wellness was because of his faith.  He got the cake and the icing too. I think I like the fact that God sees my heart and rewards me for my faith which is pleasing to him in comparison to receiving grace gifts where I give nothing to God. 

     Right now you might be going through some tough situations and that so-called light at the end of the tunnel is nothing more than another fast-paced locomotive speeding toward you ready to run you over. The greener grass seems to never grow on your side of the fence and the silver linings of your dark clouds keep flaking off.  Regardless of these things we must remember that daily God is providing for us and if we take our eyes off of the things that seem to be going wrong, we can channel enough of our consciousness to be thankful for the many things that are going right.  The devil always wants you to shift away from the positive to dwell on the negative. Don’t do it.  It isn’t worth it and it takes you down a rabbit hole of despair and potential depression.

     The lepers might have wanted an instant healing, but it happened as they were walking toward the priests – who knows maybe they were so focused on what was wrong and anticipating relief later that they didn’t even realize that their healing was in their walking.  One did…and he turned back and gave thanks.  Don’t be so focused on your problems or what might even seem to be a solution that you miss the healing and the opportunity to turn back and give thanks.

The B.I.B.L.E.

Joshua 1:8 (NIV) –“This book of the law shall not depart out of your mouth; you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to act in accordance with all that is written in it.”  

       We have all shunned the need to read the instruction manuals that accompany the newly acquired gadgets we purchase.  We figure we are smart enough and astute enough to figure out how to put it together; how it operates; and how to maintain it.  But in actuality when reality sets in, we realize there is always an extra bolt or screw left over when we do it our way.  Often our attempts to do-it-yourself can lead to costly malfunctions.  Some things are too complex and intricate to leave up to educated guessing.  Such intricacy is seen in life on planet Earth and God, our Creator, has provided a basic instruction manual ( the Bible) with guidelines, case studies, testimonials and even some step-by-step instructions for many daily situations.  Basis Instructions Before Leaving Earth!

       While everything we encounter in the human experience is not spelled out verbatim in scripture – there are key references, notable parables and plentiful examples to help us live the life of promise God intended.  Find a version of the Bible that best explains God’s word in a way that is clear to you; join a Bible study and ask God for His enlightenment of the scripture.  Read the book. Some like to start with the Gospels, but if you prefer a little more action then read the story of Achan (Joshua 7:1-26) and see how God showed Joshua how to figure out a “Who-Done-It” mystery gangum style.  But whatever you do….read the book.  It truly is a life-saver!

Be Gracious!

Psalm 103:8 -The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.”

      I have always been told that I had quite a way with words.  I remember in my youthful, less tactful days, a gentleman said that I had the unequaled ability to respond to less-than-intelligent-discourse in a way that I could step on someone’s toes and not mess up their shine or as they say – I would tell it ‘straight with no chaser’.  I have to admit that back in the day my patience for ignorance was nil or next to none.  Once I discerned that the person I was talking with was a filibuster, a show boater, a braggart or a liar, I dismissed them and dismissed myself from the conversation.  Why waste good listening on foolish talk.

     In some regards we have all played the role of the 'mouth' when we have approached God with foolish talk; whether we were telling God about our plans, our directives, our decisions or belly-aching about our circumstances.  We have engaged in show boating when we speak more highly of ourselves than we ought knowing full well that if it was not for the grace of God we would be lost.  We have all lied, even if it was only to ourselves about our abilities to handle our lives.  Through it all God never gives us his love in a filter. He does not handle us ‘straight with no chaser’. His love is always embraced with not only mercy but grace. God never dismisses us or tunes us out.  He is a gracious in his love and care. 

     We must exercise gracious living when we interact with others.  Not everyone will respond favorably but that is not our concern.  Covered in the blood of Jesus and guided by our Advocate, the Holy Spirit, we must exhibit behaviors that edify, lift and encourage those that might not know how great our God is.  We are a reflection of the God we serve; so always put your best foot forward and be gracious!

ZZZZZZZ

Psalm 121:3 (ASV) “He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: He that keepeth thee will not slumber.”
       I am back… I took a brief hiatus from my early morning blog writing yesterday to sleep in and get some much needed rest.  My body is experiencing physical fatigue from weeks of sorting, packing and moving; my mind is juggling a few upcoming projects; my spirit is on fire from hosting my last First Friday Fellowship Praise and Worship ministry meeting of the year on Dec. 4^th and I just ended teaching my college courses and completed evaluating and calculating their final grades.  To say the least, I was exhausted.  My physical body has been battered and bruised; my spiritual and emotional highs have been raised to a new limit and the joy of moving into a great new space has all but taken to me a new level of overload.

    I needed the rest but I am so thankful that I have a God who neither slumbers nor sleeps.  He is on point 25/8/366.  Because he is going to be up anyway…why should I?  I look forward to winding down at the end of a full day and just turning everything over to God. I don’t worry about what I didn’t not get a chance to complete nor do I mottle over non-returned calls; unopened emails; and unread text messages.  I live by the mantra that “Everything is in Divine order.”  Therefore my sleep time is divinely appointed and in order.

      Are you consumed by a heavy workload; do you seem to always be the one bringing extra work home; or having to spend late hours trying to finalize a project.  If you just can’t seem to fit everything you need to complete in a day’s time frame; then let me encourage you to set a time to put stuff down. The body of Christ is tired and when we are tired we minimize our effectiveness.  Don’t underestimate what a good night’s sleep can do for your entire being.   Some might tell you that you need to get organized and learn how to prioritize.  Those skills are equitable and necessary but nothing trumps turning stuff over to the Master.   Pray over it and then turn it over to God to handle while you get some ZZZZZZs. If you trust in Him, he will not only grant you a great night’s sleep, but he will align things so that upon your awakening the right people will be on board, the places you need to go will be accessible; the people you need to meet will be available and the actions you need to take will run smoothly.

     People who like to run around like headless chickens, constantly pecking at their iPads, Androids and smartphones don’t impress me; anyone can look busy, but it is difficult to fake being well rested.  Try it you might like it.  Make up your mind and set a ‘STOP’ time for yourself for tonight; earlier than you usually quit activities; pray throughout the day for the Holy Spirit to help you meet your ‘wind-down’ goal and then just do it.  Turn in early and watch as God turns some things in your life around.

No Comparison

Galatians 6:4 (NLV):  “Everyone should look at himself and see how he does his own work. Then he can be happy in what he has done. He should not compare himself with his neighbor.” 

     We are individually and uniquely made by the hand of our Creator as he knit us together in our mothers’ wombs.  We have our own special styles, tastes, likes and dislikes. We have wonderful skills and talents, though similar in type are all different in degree, scope and number. We are special to God as individual works of art on his potter’s wheel. It is said that God’s gift to us is our talent, but our gift to God is how we use it for his glory.

     As we go about the purpose of our lives and fulfill the works that God has placed along our paths we must be careful not to compare our journey with that of others. Even cars driving along on the same highway, heading in the same direction travel at different speeds going to different destinations.  Some drivers get on and never change lanes until it is time to exit; while others weave about like honey bees darting from flower to flower. 

     The scripture reminds us to scrutinize ourselves and to run quality control tests on our own work. As we focus on doing our best with the cards we have been dealt, we should not have time or interest in comparing our walk with anyone else.  It is good to have role models and to look up to others for examples.  It is ok to glance at the paths that others have taken so that we might learn from others' mistakes and good fortunes; but we must draw the line when we try to disregard what God has prepared for us.  Our journey is special and our way has been ordained by God.  Every walk that looks easy or better than the one we are on only causes us to sell short the benefits that God has placed in the journey we have been assigned. 

    Have your trips, stumbles and falls along the way been because your path has been so rough and rugged or has it been because you have your eyes gazing in someone else’s lane and missed the warnings, potholes and pitfalls on your own path?. Stay in your own lane and enjoy what lies ahead for you.  God is a way maker and your journey will bring you joy and him glory.

So blessed!

Matthew 6:3 - "But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you."

Today is the last 'First Friday" of 2015 and I am so excited.  Today I will host the last First Friday Fellowship Praise and Worship Ministry meeting for the year; but what makes it so exciting is that God has blessed me to host it in my new residence.  I transformed the house formal living room into my "prayer room" and amidst boxes and plastic storage tubs we shall raise praise and honor to our awesome God.  This move has been less than smooth, but on bull's eye target in God's divine order.  From friends pitching in the help 'tote' what appeared to be zillions of boxes of books to finding old family pictures and treasures that had long been forgotten in storage facilities - everything has been divinely inspired. Through it all whether crammed into a small space or in the open dining hall of a restaurant, First Friday Fellowship has gathered to stand as testimony of the fact that when you seek the kingdom first God shall provide.

Relax

Matthew 11:28-30 "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light."

Hard to believe it has been a week since Thanksgiving.  Over the past week I have moved, sorted, unpacked and scrambled to put things in place. How quickly time has flown.  Today I am going to take the advice of a good friend and for at least a little while ( in the midst of all the stuff that still needs to be done) I am going to relax. 

There's nothing like rest and rejuvenation to spark the spirit and heal the soul.  Sometimes we just need to put the brakes on and slow ourselves down to a complete stop.  Many of us are running on full throttle so much that we are whisking through life and really not enjoying the scenery. We all know that the rat race is out there.... but we also know that the second rat gets the cheese.  Slow down... feast on the day... smell the flowers; better yet take some time and actually plant a few.    We hurry though each day wishing for it to be over but in reality we are asking for our lives to hurry and be done.  You might say- "I can't wait until next month, this project will conclude." It seems like a harmless statement but remember our words are very powerful. Before you know it the time has come and gone; but what other important things have you also sped through?  Time you could have spent with family; time you could have enjoyed doing things you like; reading, crafts, movies; time you could have used deepening your relationship with God. Well after years of chasing the brass ring and always falling and skinning my knees I am embracing the fine art of doing as Jesus says in Matthew 11:28-30 "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”

The Feast of Famine

Philippians 4:12  -"I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need."

Some days it seems we have a little surplus; enough to share with others and a little left over to bank away. Then other times we are ordering from the dollar menu and not super-sizing a thing. Our journey is full of days of plenty and nights of insufficiency; but through it all the secret of enduring is to do as Paul prescribes.  There are three things he shared in his epistle to the church at Philippi.  

1) He acknowledged that abasement is where we are "brought". Usually we do not venture to go to the minimum.  We are often brought into situations where we may be depleted or used up.  Whether it is our money, our time, our resources or our energy, we can be drained if we are taken out of our element and operate in unfamiliar dimensions. Therefore a remedy is to get back to the familiar and operate in your strong suit.

2) He tells that there is a 'know-how' associated with levels of existence so we must be cognizant of where we are, how we got there and then be open to shift between one and the other without it effecting who we are.  The old adage states that "clothes do not make the man"; character is what defines him. So whether your shoe bottoms are red or full of patchwork, carry yourself with dignity and keep your head and countenance up.

3) Paul stated that he learned to 'face' any situation. No matter what station you find yourself in life, do not be ashamed of where God has placed you.  Whether in the High Court or in the prison; Paul never lowered his standards or lost his inner self worth.  He knew and always proclaimed that it was not him but the Christ that lived within him that made all the difference in the world.  As long as we have the King of kings, the Lord of Lords and the purveyor of everything in us, why should we care whether we are being escorted to our private table at 'McCormick and Schmick's' or standing in a soup line.  Keep your head up. Nothing lasts forever but God!  So if you are 'up' right now, be kind to those who are not.  If your train has entered a dark tunnel, rest assured soon there will be the light of Jesus to illuminate your way and get you back on prosperity's track. Manufacturer Use Only

Psalm 51:9    “Create in me a clean heart, O God,  and put a new and right spirit within me.”

     Whether it was a computer unit, high-end technical instrument or simple MP3 player, we have all owned or seen a piece of technology that had inscribed on the back - “Do Not Open – No Consumer Parts Inside”.  In essence the warning was telling us to not tamper with the merchandise and that if anything went wrong there were not parts that could be replaced by the consumer.  Only the manufacturer could handle any of the workings on the inside.  Well this is true with us also.  In a recent conversation with my pastor we discussed how we often see areas in our lives that need fixing and we strive to make the changes ourselves.  She reminded me of my own tendency to try to fix the ailments when in all honesty I had to re-evaluate and note that there are some things (and usually it is most things) that need mending or repair could only be addressed by the manufacturer, our creator God.  

     Even simple things like being kinder or less judgmental or more patient all require a rewiring by the God who knows us better on the inside than we think we know ourselves on the outside.  We may be able to make temporary fixes on some physical and emotional traits but to make lasting changes only God has the keys to unlock the old and instate the new.  Let me encourage you today to not worry about what is wrong or how it can be fixed, simply take your concerns to God in prayer.  Just like the high-tech equipment, don’t be surprised if God has to turn your life over or upside down in order to get to the area of need.  It might mean shutting you down for a while or even taking you out of the environment where the problems may exist; but rest assured you may be displaced or a little topsy-turvy, but you are never out of the Master’s hand.

All Things New

Revelation 21:5 - "And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful."

Good morning faithful readers.

I pray you had a safe, joyous and memorable Post-Thanksgiving weekend. Many of you traveled to be with family and friends and we are thankful for traveling coverage of your journeys. As we begin this work week let me offer praise to our awesome God for his provision of safe shelter and a new beginning.  I am now fully moved into my new residence and busily transforming it from a house into a home.  I can never find the words to describe how relieved I am to have the packing and moving behind me and the joy of anticipation as I now unpack and arrange my "treasures" in their new surroundings! Just as I have taken on a refreshed "newness" in my new home; so it seems even my old furniture, pictures, appliances and even Tupperware seem to be revitalized in our new environment.  God makes ALL things new!!  Look around and really notice something you have had for awhile and appreciate how God makes it like new just for you.  Your car may be old but it rides like new - especially when you appreciate not having a car note. Your outfit might be from last year but how nice it is that it still fits -even after all that Thanksgiving feast.  Find the beauty in what you have.

Don't Hesitate

1 Samuel 17:48: “ So it was, when the Philistine arose and came and drew near to meet David, that David   hurried and ran toward the army to meet the Philistine.” 

        Once David had analyzed the problem (Goliath); figured out the reward ( riches, honor and a beautiful woman); and came up with a battle plan (5 smooth stones and a slingshot), he did not hesitate to confront the issue head on.  Goliath made light of his young adversary and mockingly walked slowly toward him as he taunted David with curses.  This did not sway David in the least.  He knew his objective and he ran into his destiny.  Today is the last day of the first month of the new year and we can already note  how quickly time is flying by. Do not let opportunities to slay the giant, pressing issues in your life pass by.  Time waits for no one. It keeps marching on whether we are prepared for the future or not.  

         Let’s not waste precious time procrastinating and hesitating under the guise that we are thoroughly analyzing the problem.  While it is beneficial, just like David, to have a battle plan in place.  It is never advantageous to repetitiously rehearse and never carry out the real act.  David knew that time was of the essence and that God’s protection and grace were upon him at that very hour.  God does not do for one what he is not willing to do for others.  Whatever is on your heart.  Fill out that application; make that phone call; shut down that repressive relationship; start the ball rolling to open your own business; learn to sew; stop smoking; join a fitness group…..just do it!!!    

         My college friends and I loved to play Bid Whist and one of our favorite taunts was to tell a player who was slow to act…”study long...study wrong”.  In essence,  take a good look, sum up the situation, map out your strategy and play your hand - don’t hesitate.  Strike while the iron is hot.  Go for it.

Give Thanks and Be Blessed!

Seek First

Matthew 6:33  (ESV) “But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”

      We use our education and our experience and even our hunches to decide the best courses of action… only to discover that no amount of forethought or critical thinking can outweigh the power of seeking God’s guidance in any situation.  No matter what the toil, trial or challenge, God’s way is always the best way.  No need to try all the other alternatives before we finally give it to God. Our God is a God of FIRSTs.    We offer first fruits…. We pass down special blessings to our first born, so why should we bring our concerns to God last?  We try to fix things ourselves, over and over again; then finally we ask a close friend for their advice.  When that seems like a dead end, we ask other friends and family and eventually we even seek outside advice from self-proclaimed experts, counselors, and even self-help books.

     Don’t’ let intellect overrun intelligence.  Our brains tell us we can figure it out given enough time, but our hearts know that it is best to go to God FIRST and ask for his guidance.  We are not to be so concerned about things; but focus on the main thing. . . the progression of God’s Kingdom here on Earth.

      Everything we need God has already provided. Much like how our parents would shop early for our Christmas gifts and hide them in the house until the appropriate time to reveal them; God has great answers to prayers and wonderful gifts to bestow, often right within reach, but out of view.  He is more concerned with the proper timing than he is with our impatience.  As we continue to seek his righteousness, he moves certain prayer answers or gifts from the attic to the top of a hall closet and eventually when we are ready we will find it sitting right on the kitchen table fully accessible - and we will be able to say that the Lord has prepared a table before us, even in the presence of our enemies, our impatience and our struggling faith.

Careful Wishes

John 15:7 (NRSV):  “If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask for whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.” 

     We have heard it under many circumstances; “be careful what you wish for – you might just get it.”  I don’t know too many people who don’t want their wishes to come true. We would like to believe that what we truly desire will manifest itself, just because we believe. The real issue is not in the manifestation of the desire, but in the desire itself.  What is it that you are really wishing for and wanting to have happen?  That is where the ‘care’ must be taken. As believers in Christ we trust his word and know that he is truthful.  Therefore if Christ gives us the parameters around achievable wishes, then it seems plausible that we must exercise caution in what we wish for.  When Jesus proclaims our liberties to wish and receive those wishes; they are bound up in two parameters.  The Expanded Bible (EXB) relates this way: [If you remain [abide] in me and ·follow my teachings (my words abide/remain in you), you can ask anything you want, and it will be given to (be done for; come to) you]. So I believe that if we remain united (joined) with Jesus and follow his commands, then our wishes will be in alignment with the desires that he has for us and they will come about upon our asking - some instantaneously, some over time. 

      This means that my asking should therefore be in harmony with what God has purposed for me.  As I ask for revelation, clarity, forgiveness, etc., these things are in alignment with what God wants for me along my life’s journey, so he is apt to bring those desires to fruition.  If my wishes are for things that are detrimental or distractions to my walk with him, he loves me so much, he will not make them a part of my reality or he will withhold them until I mature or progress to a place where I can handle them properly.  

      Every parent wants and prepares their child to be independent and able to exercise their freedom, but we would never give car keys to an 10-year old, even if they were tall enough to reach the peddles and see over the steering wheel. No matter how much experience they have driving a car using their Wii game, they are not ready to handle a real automobile.  So they can wish all they want but as responsible adults we know what is best.  God hears your wishes and he knows what is best; so make sure you are careful about your wishes.  Wishes show God your maturity level and how many more lessons you might need to repeat before you can move on to a higher level of responsibility.

Great work

Psalm 111:2-4  (ESV) – “Great are the works of the Lord, studied by all who delight in them. Full of splendor and majesty is his work, and his righteousness endures forever. He has caused his wondrous works to be remembered; the Lord is gracious and merciful.”

      As we enter this week of Thanksgiving festivities I know that we all have examples somewhere swimming around in our consciousness of how good God has been to us.  If we just take a brief moment and allow some of those examples to float to the surface we would relive the awesome splendor of knowing how great God is.  Of all of the eggs and sperms to ever evolve, the one distinct pairing that constituted you had to find themselves in a sea of turbidity.  That’s not chance – that is God.  Of all of the people on the planet, on every head, whether now bald or not, every hair shaft has been counted. That’s not circumstantial– that is God.  Of all the shades of the rainbow, the color of your eyes, the tint of your hair and the hue of your skin are not by genetic probability - you are wonderfully and fearfully made. That is God.

     As a biologist who loves to study the ‘how’ and ‘why’ of life; it gives me great joy when I come upon a mystery that baffles my non-believing colleagues.  Where physicists like to ponder, I love to praise.  Where scientists like to speculate, I love to shout. Where chemists like to clamor, I love to clap and cheer.   They have given a name to the space between the infinitesimally small subatomic particles that make up the interior of atoms.  I call it God’s playground. No matter how far out in space we search or how deep within the interior of the earth we plunge, we will never come to the edge of the awesomeness of God.

Quit Playing!

 Psalm 39:8 (NCV)– “Save me from all my sins. Don’t let wicked fools make fun of me.”

       When I relay some off-the-wall information to one of my good girlfriends about any outlandish action or deed that I have learned about, she will often quip  "quit playing". She tells me in essence to stop trying to trick her mind and give it data that just can't possibly be true.  We usually laugh it off because whatever it is that I am telling her is usually something funny that I have seen on some television show where they have caught someone doing something so foolish it is not hard to see why they were caught.  I remember telling her about the man who attempted to steal an ATM machine by tying a chain around it to his truck bumper (not the pickup truck, but the bumper) and sped off.  Well needless to say the police found him at home with his bumper-less truck parked in the driveway because they easily traced the license plate that was still attached to the bumper - what an idiot!  She hollered "quit playing" and we both laughed out loud.

         The devil will do foolish things in attempts to thwart the plans of God.  One of his often tried plots is to whisper ludicrous suggestions and taunts to you.  He will use foolish statements that talk about your trials, stumbles, fall and failures.  He will constantly rehearse ideas of things you have attempted that might have fallen through or relationships that turned sour.  He will use people close to you to torment you with “I told you so” and other babbles that will distract you.  Do not let it sway you or throw you off schedule.  When these foolish statements come your way…do like my girlfriend does and shout “quit playing” and laugh it off.  “Quit playing” is a cynical way of expressing to the devil that you just can’t believe how stupid he is for trying to come between you and what God has ordained for your life.  It reminds him that his foolishness is not going to affect you because you know what he is saying is madness.  He is a liar and the father of all lies. When you place whatever the devil says up against the Word of God it loses all of its power and turns to dust.  So shake it off from the beginning and do not let it take root.

It's Your Time!

Joshua 3:7- "And the Lord said to Joshua, “Today I will begin to exalt you in the eyes of all Israel, so they may know that I am with you as I was with Moses."

       After the death of Moses, Joshua took on the role of leading the nation of Israel into the Promised Land. He was faithful in following and serving Moses and capable and courageous for the task, but God knew that was not enough. In order to be truly effective the people needed to "see" that Joshua did not just inherit the position because he was next in line, but because it was his God-ordained and appointed time to be in the lead position. Joshua did not ask God for favor nor did he command the people to listen to, obey and respect him. He simply kept doing what he had been assigned to do and God made the royal decree and backed it up with signs and wonders. 

     Now is your time.  You have been faithful, on point, serving and doing God's will; often without recognition, reward or even compensation. You might have even taken some hits because you chose to stand on the side of righteousness; but alas your time is now. God is working right now to exalt you so that those who might doubt will have no recourse.  This is your day, your week, your month, your year... this is your time. All that you have done is not in vain; but don't try to force your hand; let God work on your behalf, if you want to be frustrated put your hands in it -if you want it fixed let God handle it.  Trust God - you have sacrificed and been faithful - it's your time.

Unasked Answers

Romans 13:30 - “Now I beseech you, brethren, for the Lord Jesus Christ's sake, and for the love of the Spirit, that ye strive together with me in your prayers to God for me;” 

          We have all been sidelined from what are commonly known as ‘unanswered prayers’. There are some wishes and desires that we have sighed and wept over; petitioned and appealed for; begged and fasted for; and yet they remained for the most part - unanswered.   But what about those wishes that we might not verse or share with others yet somehow they end up being checked off of our ‘to do’ list.  There is such as overwhelming sense of joy and favor when we are the recipients of random acts of kindness.

         Well faithful reader this is my charge to you today. Open yourself up to the leadership of the Holy Spirit as he directs you to be the shining star in assisting someone else today.  Your act of consideration and kindness will not fall upon blind eyes or deaf ears. While those you are helping may never know it was you who came in at the midnight hour, there is a rush within our souls when we learn that our random act of love has made someone happy, even if for just one day. When you help someone unexpectedly, especially if it is in an area of need,  that is an unasked answer.  NO question was asked. No favor was sought. But the giver knew the receiver’s need and fulfilled it.     

     Unasked Answers may be the solution for someone’s problem today.  They may not know how to ask for help or might feel embarrassed that they even need assistance.  Sometimes it is pride, but it could be that they might be a bit overwhelmed by the issue and are too embarrassed now to ask.  Find a need and fill it.  Who knows on your way out to do something kind for someone; another person could be targeting you for their expression of love.  Watch out there now!!

Time Stands Still

Joshua 10:13 (GNT) –“The sun stood still and the moon did not move until the nation had conquered its enemies. This is written in the Book of Jashar. The sun stood still in the middle of the sky and did not go down for a whole day.” 

       Do you have some unfinished business that you feel you might not be able to complete because time and resources are not on your side?  Could one more hour of study possibly increase your scoring potential?  Would an additional week make the difference between a mediocre and a good product?  Can an additional month give you more time to raise the funds you need? Would another year make your business truly successful? We often try to negotiate with time, but time waits for no one…or does it? 

      Joshua and his troops saw that their battle was requiring more daylight so Joshua spoke to the sun and commanded the daylight to remain as he and his troops fought on.  God wants your days to be filled with successful ventures and for your life to be a reflection of the good and grace that he provides. Remember it is never too late for God.  Things are never out of the control of God’s influence. When Joshua spoke into his destiny, God answered and responded with a resounding ‘yes’ - and the sun remained in position.  Speak power into your situation.  Speak with authority for what you need and want.  The universe is just waiting to respond and give you what you need.  Things are being held up in the heavens and just require you to speak up to manifest them into this physical world.  God has already answered the prayers that you need more time to carry out a mission or that you need the resources or people to be in place to carry out your mission.  All that is needed from you is to believe and receive.
