Exodus 17: 15 – “ And Moses
built an altar, and called the name of it Jehovah-nissi”
When Joshua led the Israelite
army into battle against the Amalekites, Moses went upon a hill overlooking the
battle field to pray. As he held up his
staff the Israelites were winning but as his arms tired and the staff lowered,
the Amalekites would prevail. Moses’
brother Aaron and Hur placed Moses on a rock and held his hands up until the
battle was over and Israel was victorious.
God instructed Moses to
write down the victory and repeat it to Joshua to give him encouragement for
the future battles he would have to lead.
Moses called God Jehovah Nissi because God revealed himself as our
banner, our victory. He is the one who
wins our battles. The story written down for Joshua benefits us as well so that
we will remember it as we go into battle. There will always be war so don't be
surprised by it. Just remember that God is always the winner.
We are all confronted with
battles throughout our lives. What are
you battling right now? Bitterness, injustice, devastating medical reports, loneliness
depression, and financial downturns are just a few of the battles that rage
endlessly and it might be hard to see the victory at the end. Remember and call
upon Jehovah Nissi. Raise your hands in prayer the way Moses did and don't give
up. God is faithful to fulfill his word. When your battle is over you can raise
the banner of God’s victory high for all to see and proclaim that Jehovah Nissi
is your God who has secured your victory.
